طَرَقَت مَطلَعَ الثُرَيّا وَوَلَّت
وَالثُرَيّاwhile the Pleiades تَشُمُّsmells ريحَthe scent of الوُقوعِsetting
وَالثُرَيّا تَشُمُّ ريحَ الوُقوعِ
She visited by night at the Pleiades' rising, and departed
The Pleiades rose and swayed,
while the Pleiades smelled the scent of their setting,
And the Pleiades scent the breeze of falling,
تَحتَbeneath جُنحٍa wing مِنَof الدُجىdarkness أَورَثَتهُshe bequeathed to it
تَحتَ جُنحٍ مِنَ الدُجى أَورَثَتهُ
عَبَقاًa fragrance فيin قَميصِهِits shirt المَخلوعِcast-off
عَبَقاً في قَميصِهِ المَخلوعِ
beneath a wing of darkness, to which she bequeathed
Under wings of darkness it left behind,
a fragrance in its cast-off shirt.
A fragrance on its discarded shirt.
أَيُّهاO اللَيلُnight هَلdid ...? دَرىknow البَدرُthe full moon أَنّيthat I
أَيُّها اللَيلُ هَل دَرى البَدرُ أَنّي
بِتُّI spent the night مِنin relation to أُختِهِhis sister مَكانَthe place of الضَجيعِthe bedfellow
بِتُّ مِن أُختِهِ مَكانَ الضَجيعِ
O night, did the full moon know that I

أَمكَنَتنيshe enabled me مِنَto العِناقِembracing فَلَمّاthen when
أَمكَنَتني مِنَ العِناقِ فَلَمّا
جَلَبَbrought الفَجرُdawn ساعَةَthe hour of التَوديعِfarewell
جَلَبَ الفَجرُ ساعَةَ التَوديعِ
She let me embrace her; then, when
She allowed me to embrace her, but when
dawn brought the hour of farewell,
Dawn brought the hour of parting,
عَمَدَتshe propped up بُردَهاher mantle بِغُصنٍwith a bough وَقامَتand she rose
عَمَدَت بُردَها بِغُصنٍ وَقامَت
تَنفُضُshe shakes off الطَلَّthe dew أَحمَراًred مِنfrom دُموعِtears
تَنفُضُ الطَلَّ أَحمَراً مِن دُموعِ
she propped her mantle with a bough and rose,
She shook off her chill with a branch, and stood
shaking off the dew, red with tears.
