يَقولونَthey say ليto me يَوماًone day وَقَدand already عَنَّappeared جائِزاًpassing by
كَماjust as عَنَّappeared ظَبيُa gazelle السربِof the herd يَتَّبِعُit follows السرباthe herd
They said to me one day, as he appeared, passing by,
Like a gazelle of the herd appearing as it follows the herd:
تَعَلَّمَhe trained نَجّاراًas a carpenter فَقُلتُso I said لَعَلَّهُperhaps he
تَعَلَّمَهاhe learned it مِنfrom نَجرِcarving مُقلَتِهِhis eye القَلباthe heart
“He has trained as a carpenter.” I said, “Perhaps
He learned it from his eye’s carving of the heart.
شَقاوَةُmisfortune أَعوادٍpieces of wood تَصَدّىhe set himself لِجَهدِهاto torment them
فَآوِنَةًso at times قَطعاًcutting وَآوِنَةًand at times ضَرباstriking
Poor pieces of wood—he set himself to torment them,
Now with cutting, now with blows.
غَدَتthey became خَشَباًtimber تَجنيthey reap ثِمارَthe fruits of جِنايَةٍa crime
بِماfor what اِستَرَقتهُthey stole it مِنfrom مَعاطِفِهِhis body's curves قُضباas boughs
They became timber, reaping the fruits of a crime,
For what they stole from his curves when they were boughs.”
