بِغَمّىin my grief مِنover عَلِيٍّAli
إِذاwhen اِنبَعَثَتsprang to life شَبيبَتُهُhis youth اِنبِعاثاa resurgence
In my grief for Ali,
when his youth surges back to life,
لِعَشرٍafter ten مِنsince مَنِيَّتِهِhis death خَوالٍgone by
مَلَأنَthey filled جَوىًburning sorrow ضُلوعِيَmy ribs وَاِكتِراثاand distress
after ten have passed since his death,
filling my ribs with burning sorrow and distress,
أَقولُI say لِطَيفِهِto his phantom وَقَدِand already اِلتَقَيناwe had met
عَلىin سِنَةٍa light sleep تَعَرَّضتِpresented itself اِحتِثاثاswiftly
I say to his phantom, as we meet
in a light sleep that swiftly came upon me:
قَطَعتَyou crossed اللَيلَthe night مِنfrom قَبرٍa grave لِقَلبٍto a heart
فَكَيفَhow, then صَدَعتَهاyou cleft them ظُلماًdarknesses ثَلاثاthree
You crossed the night from a grave to a heart—
how, then, did you cleave those three darknesses?
