فيon لَيلَةٍa night سَدِكَتclung بِالأَرضِto the earth فَحمَتُهاits coal-black darkness
وَالجَوُّand the sky أَزرَقُblue وَقّادُblazing المَصابيحِthe lamps
On a night whose coal-black darkness clung to the earth,
and the sky was blue, its lamps ablaze,
وَدَّعتُهُI bade him farewell وَكِلاناand both of us واضِعٌplacing يَدَهُhis hand
عَلىupon حَشاًa heart بِسَمومِby the searing wind of الشَوقِlonging مَلفوحِscorched
I bade him farewell, each of us laying his hand
upon a heart scorched by longing’s searing wind.
ماnot طِبتُI was content بِالعَيشِwith life نَفساًin spirit بَعدَafter فُرقَتِهاparting from her
وَالعَيشُand life ماwhat lies بَينَbetween مَذمومٍthe censured وَمَمدوحِand the praised
I found no joy in life after parting from her,
and life is what lies between the censured and the praised.
