بَداappeared الشَفَقُthe twilight الباديemerging بُعَيدَshortly after أَصيلlate afternoon
بَدا الشَفَقُ البادي بُعَيدَ أَصيل
يجرِّرُtrailing بِالآفاقِacross the horizons حُمرَred ذُيولِskirts
يجرِّرُ بِالآفاقِ حُمرَ ذُيولِ
The emerging twilight appeared shortly after late afternoon,
trailing crimson skirts across the horizons;
وَفيand in عَرضِهِits expanse الأَقصىfarthest هِلالٌa crescent كَأَنَّماas though
وَفي عَرضِهِ الأَقصى هِلالٌ كَأَنَّما
يُجَرِّرُdrags مِنهُfrom it النَسرُthe vulture ضِلعa rib قَتيلِof a slain man
يُجَرِّرُ مِنهُ النَسرُ ضِلع قَتيلِ
and in its farthest expanse, a crescent, as though
the vulture were dragging from it a slain man's rib.
