خاضواthey waded عَلَيكَfor you حَشاthe depths of الخَليجِthe gulf ضَنانَةًout of jealous concern
خاضوا عَلَيكَ حَشا الخَليجِ ضَنانَةً
بِكَfor you أَنlest تَضيعَbe lost الدُرَّةُthe pearl البَيضاءُthe white
بِكَ أَن تَضيعَ الدُرَّةُ البَيضاءُ
They waded into the gulf’s depths for you, loath
to lose you, the white pearl.
وَتَبادَرواand they hastened بِكَwith you لِلضَّريحِto the tomb صِيانَةًfor safekeeping
وَتَبادَروا بِكَ لِلضَّريحِ صِيانَةً
أَنlest تَكثُرَgrow plentiful العِقيانَةُthe pure-gold nugget الحَمراءُthe red
أَن تَكثُرَ العِقيانَةُ الحَمراءُ
And they hastened with you to the tomb, for safekeeping,
lest red gold grow plentiful.
عَجَباًwhat a marvel لِشَخصِكَat your person كَيفَhow أَعياdefied understanding كُنهُهُits true essence
عَجَباً لِشَخصِكَ كَيفَ أَعيا كُنهُهُ
حَتّىuntil تَجاذَبَكَcontended for you الثَرىthe earth وَالماءُand the water
حَتّى تَجاذَبَكَ الثَرى وَالماءُ
How wondrous your person—how its essence defied understanding,
until earth and water contended for you.
