وَفيand in أُذنِكَyour ear الجَوزاءُal-Jawza, a constellation قُرطاًan earring مُعَلَّقاًhanging
وَلِلنَّجمِand for the star فيin يُمناكَyour right hand ضِغثُa bunch بَهارِyellow flowers
And in your ear hangs al-Jawza as an earring,
With an earring of green chrysolite dangling in your ear,
And for the star, a posy of yellow flowers in your right hand.
And for the star in your right side, a fresh sprig.
وَأَنتَand you هِلالٌa crescent بَلrather أَقولُI say غَزالَةٌa gazelle
وَحَولَكَand around you سِربٌa herd لاnot أَقولُI say دَراريradiant stars
And you are a crescent—rather, I say, a gazelle;
You're a crescent, no - I should say a gazelle,
And around you is a herd—I do not call them radiant stars.
With a flock around not a herd.
كَماas قُلتُI said ماwhat باليmy condition أَرىI see اللَيلthe night سَرمَداًunending
وَإِلّاand otherwise فَلِمthen why لاnot يَنجَليclears away بِنَهارِwith daylight
As I said, why do I see the night unending?
As I said why do I see the night eternal?
Otherwise, why does it not give way to daylight?
Otherwise why doesn't it make way for daylight?
يَقولونَthey say طالَgrew long اللَيلُthe night وَاللَيلُand the night لَمdid not يَطُلgrow long
وَهَلand is there فيهِabout it بَينَamong العاشِقينَthe lovers تَماريdispute
They say the night grew long, though the night did not grow long;
They say the night is long but it's not long.
And is there any dispute about it among lovers?
Is there any rivalry between lovers in it?
إِذاwhen جَنَّfell dark لَيلُthe night الحُبِّof love لَمdid not يَدرِknow نائِمٌa sleeper
بِهِin it ماwhat يُقاسيsuffers هائِمٌa lovesick wanderer وَيُداريand conceals
When love's night falls, no sleeper knows
When the night of love comes none sleeping knows
What a lovesick wanderer suffers in it and conceals.
What the roving lover endures and contests.
وَقالواand they said تَجَلّىbecame radiant بِالمَشيبِwith gray hair عِذارُهُhis cheek hair
فَقُلتُso I said تَجَلّىbecame radiant بِالمَشيبِwith gray hair عِذاريmy cheek hair
And they said, 'His cheek-down shone with gray hair';
And they said his passion appeared with his gray hair,
So I said, 'My cheek-down shone with gray hair.'
But I said my passion appeared with my gray hair.
فَجاشَتthen seethed لَهاat it مِنهُمamong them صُدورٌbreasts كَأَنَّهاas though they were
غُمودُsheaths سُيوفٍof swords وَالسُيوفُand the swords عَواريbare
Then their breasts seethed at those words, as though they were
Their breasts surged against her as if they were
Sword-sheaths, while the swords were bare.
The curved blades of swords and the swords naked.
وَلَوand if شِئتُI wished ثارَتflared up بَينَناbetween us حَربُa war عاشِقٍof a lover
يَكونُwould be بِهاin it ثَوبُthe garment السَقامِof sickness شِعاريmy next-to-skin garment
And had I wished, a lover's war would have flared between us,
Had I wished, there would have arisen between us a war of lovers
In which the robe of sickness would be my innermost garment.
With the garb of resignation my banner.
وَلكِنand yet عَدَتنيkept me away ياO اِبنَةَdaughter الخَيرِof goodness عَنهُمُfrom them
عَواديravages خُطُوبٍof calamities فيamong الخُطُوبِcalamities كِبارِgreat
But, O daughter of goodness, I was kept from them
But you, daughter of goodness, restrained me from them
By the ravages of calamities, great among calamities.
Customs of great ardors in ardors.
رَكِبتُI sailed لَهاbecause of them بَحرَthe sea الزُقاقِof al-Zuqaq, the Strait تَعَمُّداًdeliberately
وَلِلفُلكِand for the ships بَينَbetween العَدوَتَينِthe two shores تَباريmutual racing
Because of them, I deliberately sailed the Sea of al-Zuqaq,
For you I braved the sea of the lanes deliberately
While ships raced one another between the two shores,
With my boat between the two banks vying.
بِحَيثُwhere اِلتَقىmet البَحرانِthe two seas وَالمَوتُand death عازِمٌresolute
يُساوِرُناassails us مِنfrom يَمنَةٍthe right وَيَسارِand the left
Where the two seas met and death, resolute,
Where the two seas met and death was intent
Assailed us from right and left.
To beset us from the right and left.
