أَتَتنِيَit came to me مِنfrom تِلكَthose السَجاياvirtues بِنَفحَةٍwith a fragrant breath

It came to me from those virtues, bearing a fragrant breath;
A breeze came to me from those meadows
I swayed from side to side among the people, in admiration of it.
I swayed to it in life out of my wonder
وَماand not ذاكَthat إِلّاexcept أَنَّthat عَرفَthe fragrance of تَحِيَّةٍa greeting

And that was only because the scent of a greeting—
That was only because a greeting was recognized
With which you scattered musk over East and West—
With which you sprinkled musk over the East and West

فَقُلتُso I said أَمِنis it from دارينَDarin مُدَّلَجُthe night departure of الرَكبِthe caravan
Came with the westbound caravan at daybreak;
The traveling caravan heading west was diverted by it at dawn
So I said, “Did the caravan set out by night from Darin?”
So I said is it from the two abodes the diverted caravan?

Through it my mouth will open, revealing affection’s blossom,
My mouth will split open from the light of love for it
For it has brought forth in my heart for you what it has brought forth.
For it produced what it produced for you in my heart
وَإِنّيand indeed I وَإِنand even though كُنتُI was الخَلِيَّcarefree لِشَيِّقٌsurely longing
إِلَيكَfor you عَلىregardless of بُعدِthe distance of المَنازِلِthe dwellings وَالقُربِand nearness
And I, though carefree, am indeed filled with longing
And I, although I am the intimate friend, am passionate
For you, whether our dwellings are distant or near.
To you from afar and from near

Yet if circumstances allowed me to devote myself
Except that if my state allowed me to devote
To the binding duty of pilgrimage to your spacious home,
Myself to visiting your vast abode

I would surely set out for it across the stretch between Rayya’s heights
I would stand up for it between the flags of Rayya
And the protected grounds of Wadi al-Asha—that expanse of earth.
And the protected valley of Al-Ashaa from the sand

And finally, Abu al-Hasan, may the rain never leave thirsty
Afterwards, may life not thirst Abu Al-Hasan
Your lands; and may the adornments of fertility enfold you.
For your lands, and may prosperity turn to you
