وَعَشِيٍّand an evening رائِقٍlovely مَنظَرُهُits appearance
قَدindeed قَصَرناهُwe devoted it exclusively عَلىto صَرفِunmixed الشَمولِwine
And an evening, lovely to behold—
A radiant evening, its view shortened
We devoted it solely to unmixed wine.
As though the sun, midway through it
وَكَأَنَّand as though الشَمسَthe sun فيin أَثنائِهِits midst
أَلصَقَتpressed بِالأَرضِagainst the earth خَدّاًa cheek لِلنُّزولِto descend
And it was as though the sun, amid that evening,
Had brought its cheek to the ground to alight
Had pressed a cheek against the earth to set.
And the morning breeze lifts the hems of the hills
وَالصَباand the east wind تَرفَعُlifts أَذيالَthe skirts of الرُبىthe hills
وَمُحَيّاand the face of الجَوِّthe sky كَالسَيفِlike the sword الصَقيلِpolished
And the east wind lifts the skirts of the hills,
And the brisk air is like a polished sword
And the sky's face is like a polished sword.
Blessed is our dwelling, secluded
حَبَّذاhow lovely مَنزِلُناour dwelling مُغتَبَقاًas a place for evening drinking
حَيثُwhere لاnot يَنظُرُناlooks at us غَيرُother than الهَديلِthe cooing dove
How lovely our dwelling as a place for evening drinking,
Where none look upon us but the wafting breeze
Where none but a cooing dove looks upon us:
A singing bird and a bending branch
طائِرٌa bird شادٍsinging وَغُصنٌand a branch مُنثَنٍbending
وَالدُجىand darkness يَشرَبُdrinks صَهباءَthe tawny wine of الأَصيلِlate afternoon
A singing bird and a bending branch,
And the darkness drinks the whiteness of the late morning
And darkness drinks the tawny wine of sunset.
