You recognized the dwelling places at al-Nasriyya,

desolate, though once inhabited by them.

    They became faint traces there:

an effaced drainage trench and faded ash,

    lying beside upright hearthstones,

like mothers of antelope calves, or companions.

The place exchanged its people for others:

wide-eyed wild cattle and antelopes with their young.

Once you could see fair, noble women there,

rising unmindful of seeking out harm,

    speaking gently, bashful and cheerful,

neither squat and coarse nor ungainly.

When they put on bracelets and anklets,

    pearls, coral, and diadems,

and she displayed the dazzling finery of her robes,

it was as though a day without encompassing cold

were weaving shallow pools over me.

When they walked with a weight-shifting gait,

you thought their hindquarters swayed unevenly,

as they drew along their thick, tangled hair.

They swayed it, matted or loosely heaped,

as though bending a dense tamarisk.

When their backs stretched out the braids

because of their length, and the soft locks,

their thighs and fleshy sides moved languidly,

like mother-camels stepping carefully around mud,

or feeling blistering bruises beneath their padded feet.

They bared white teeth shedding crescentlike gleams,

    like lightning revealing sweet hailstones.

    They gave their husbands drink

from cool draughts that quenched burning thirst.

    The flood had left them in shaded places;

they were replenished and drawn down from rocky heights.

    You draw them down as you half-empty flasks;

the upper stones water the lower ones.

When they stirred up gravel with murmuring streams,

easy of approach, they came to feed one another.

Once you could see a tribe there, and a camel herd:

a gathered throng settling their breastbones on the hills,

    armed, protecting the traveled road.

Their horses galloped obliquely in troops.

They are of us, vying in eminence with their brother Wa'il,

    when Ma'add counts its forebears.

The two sons of Nizar relieved upheavals

and crushing hardship for those who followed:

two strongholds that were Ma'add's supporting shoulder,

two shoulders rising above the towering heights.

Thus they thrust the lofty heights away from them

and bequeathed us our stock and surpassing eminence,

where the Maker firmly shaped our natures.

A people who, when they bare their blades,

make you imagine great hanging masses from a wounded creature,

when massive ones follow in their tracks.

We see the country's firmly rooted mountains

rising high as they take up their burdens:

two seas, a fierce and rushing flood,

each forcing its way through the channels,

when it rises above them, stretched out and roaring,

full of eddies, shaking the swirling reaches.

People, if you divide them into clans,

all seek means of approach to us.

They have tested our noble character

    and shaken our weighty judgment.

Yet people have seen no equal to us,

greater in honor or stronger in defending the rash.

When they count our virtues, they see

a messenger of our people who delivered the messages,

a successor who carries out decisive judgment,

a ruling lordship and an enduring kingdom.

Tell Arwa, when she saw me distracted

and recurring care increased my turmoil:

I have seen the few years,

and a night returning as a swiftly passing day,

overtake the healthy, hopeful man through their recurrence,

whether spared a young man's tasks or laboring at them.

When the year's passing brings the next year near,

one coming year draws forward the distant, deferred end,

by destiny, as the near and immediate is brought close.

The repetition of nights is killer enough.

    Time is craftier, twisting its cords;

if a man is heedless, time is not.

One day it seeks madness and derangement for him,

    grievous calamities and intractable troubles.

But if you see me complaining of burdens

    from debt's pack-saddle and a merciless age,

    ruthless, bringing calamities and devouring,

    لَوْ يَرْكَبُ الفِيلَ لَأَمْسَى قاحِلا

    its hard fangs jutting out,

    if it mounted an elephant, the beast would become gaunt;

it would exhaust the Bactrian camels and the huge camels,

through drought's long crushing of the emaciated beasts.

But if you see me complaining of anguish

from debt's perils and a crushing weight,

as though burning fever had filled me with embers,

and afflicted the sinews of my thighs and the great veins,

and the joints among the kneecaps,

I go out on foot under the burden of my needs.

Yet I remember myself traveling the stages,

with a delegation, or pressing some need,

or visiting fair women trailing their robes,

chewing my tooth-stick and going out carefree,

    seeking gifts, playing and jesting,

while avoiding obscenity and monstrous evils.

God has spared the foolish, ignorant man

the pursuit of harm, and the heedless stranger too.

One who seeks means of approach visits

the generous man's presence and the liberal giver.

They hate the harsh, miserly man.

So I said, when wrestling with a consuming debt:

I must speak—and I was ready to speak—

seek Sulayman; you will find him generous.

He gives aid with nobility and bounty,

    seeking the reward, acting generously:

piety with which he adorned sound judgment.

So meet a substantial part of my need from your bounty.

You have always possessed bounty, answering the petitioner

with good; you are never found lying or delaying.

It arose, not snatching at a scanty share—

    Qays, counting its illustrious lords.

    They found your excellent fathers,

born to mothers who were no transplanted captives.

I—and I do not praise the base—

am a brother and maternal uncle, unfailing in courtesy,

watching over you in your absence, never abandoning you.

If he sees that scheming, envious man,

he opposes him openly and in his innermost secrecy.

    He must intend, or attempt,

to wound an aggressor seeking grave mischief,

with painful blows reaching the vital places,

leaving a headache and coughing lamentation,

like an attack of fever that leaves lingering effects.

And many a land is clothed in dusky dust,

veiling the wilderness in an effacing haze,

and in an undulating wave of the sun's saliva,

polishing the gleaming surfaces of its rises.

You see it deep at one moment, then shallow.

Its long reaches stretch the trotting young camels,

when the girths press close against the belly-bands.

I charged it to a vigorous, kicking beast,

a pale camel, neither stiff nor dependent on another.

When the driver sets the flat stones trembling,

it is as though a loudly clamoring ass were beneath me.

He has ranged far, sniffing out places where urine fell.

You see bitten places on both sides of his neck,

    cuts from his biting females,

and circles of gaping wounds from their kicks,

on the throat of a stout ass raising loud cries,

driving six females, hopping with hobbling steps.

You see him uneven in one foreleg,

as though bound with a restraining hobble.

He grazes the grassy gullies of al-Najaf

and the two broad plains, leaping as he climbs

a rocky ridge like the spine of a weary homebound beast.

His two hooves strike hard, as though shod,

darkened by his turning over the flat stones.

He scatters outlying pebbles like slingstones,

as competing throwers exchange their casts.

The muscles have yielded to his swift stretching,

drawn tight, though his chosen females have not yet yielded to him.

They have grown lean, except a barren, unbred one,

from summer's flies and waning pregnancy sickness.

They become withered from his driving,

as you dry unstrung bows of nabʿ wood.

They race, neither crooked-legged nor stunted,

keeping together, trampling the green growth,

until they have passed through the departing spring.

The year's matted coat slipped from their firm bodies,

and they donned robes of their silken hair.

He cast their tattered rags away,

their firm spines drawn tight like twisted cords.

    He renewed their slender bodies,

as you draw polished sword blades.

He took them into the waste, excusing none of the ailing,

while coaxing the lean, upright females.

When he stood motionless, he faced the late afternoons,

seeking refuge at one time, attaining it at another.

Until, when he had dried the rivulets

of al-Mi'a, the meadows, and the linked stretches,

and left the little pools and reservoirs behind,

and was needily biting the prickly awns,

    summer burned with blazing heat,

raising dusty gusts that dried the water's remnants.

It shriveled the two swellings beside his short ribs:

a lean beast, sparing his water or abstaining from it,

like a naked runaway, left unrestrained.

He stirred them up, heading into open wastes,

racing as they competed with him.

He searched with them for dwindling springs:

a strong-footed ass, making for rough gullies.

They leave the gravel's margins like sieves,

while he sings them a driving song,
