ياoh لَيْتَif only شِعْرِيmy knowledge عَنْكُمُabout you حَنِيفاO Hanifa
وَقَدْand already جَدَعْناwe have cut off مِنْكُمُfrom among you الأُنُوفاthe noses
Oh, would that I knew about you, Hanifa,
Oh, would I knew of you when hale,
now that we have cut off your noses:
Though from you we tore the nose in gale,
أَتَحْمِلُونَwill you carry? بَعْدَناafter us السُيُوفاthe swords
أَوْor تَغْزِلُونَyou spin الخِرْفِعَthe cotton المَنْدُوفاthe carded
will you bear swords after us,
Bear you after us the glaives still,
or spin the carded cotton?
Or do you card the combed wool bale?
إِنَّindeed الرَبيعَthe spring الجَوْدَthe rain-rich وَالخَرِيفاand the autumn
يَدَاthe two hands of أَبِيAbu (father of) العَبَّاسِal-Abbas وَالصُيُوفاand the summers
Indeed, the rain-rich spring and autumn—
Lo, the spring, the rain and the autumn,
and the summers—are Abu al-Abbas's two hands.
My father Abbas' hands and woof!
