أَنْتyou امْرُؤٌa man تُعْرَفُare known بِالتَكَرُّمِfor generosity
O Harb, O son of Hakam—for the seeker of bounty,
O war, O son of wisdom for the blind,
you are a man known for generosity.
You are a man known for generosity,
بَنَىbuilt لَكَfor you المُنْذِرُal-Mundhir ماwhat لَمْnot يُهْدَمِbe demolished
وَسَمَكَand raised high الجارُودُal-Jarud سَمْكa lofty edifice الأَجْسَمِthe most massive
Al-Mundhir built for you what has not been torn down,
Al-Mundhir built for you what has not been destroyed,
and al-Jarud raised the most imposing edifice
And Al-Jarood made you as solid as granite,
مِنَof الفَعَالِnoble deeds وَالدَسِيعand largesse الأَعْظَمِthe greatest
فَماso not ظَلَمْتَyou wronged الناسَthe people بِالتَجَهضُمِthrough overbearing pride
of noble deeds and the greatest largesse.
With glorious deeds and immense valor,
So you have not wronged people through overbearing pride.
You have not wronged people with aggression,
وَبِالفَعالِand through noble deeds لَكَfor you فِيin المُقَدَّمِthe foremost place
نُورٌa light مَضَىwent forth تَنْوِيرُهُits radiance لَمْnot يُظْلمِgrow dark
And through your deeds, at the forefront you have
And with your deeds you are in the vanguard,
a light whose radiance has shone on, never darkened.
A light that shone and was not extinguished,
وَمِنْand from تَمِيمٍTamim لَكَfor you فِيin العَرَمْرَمِthe teeming host
غُلْبٌmassive ones رَوَاسِيهِنَّtheir firmly rooted foundations فِيin مُجْرَنْثَمِa clustered mass
And from Tamim, in the teeming host, you have
And from Tamim you gained victory in Al-Armarm,
mighty masses, their foundations firm in a close-packed throng,
Conquering them in Mujrantham,
وَالرِفْدُand support مِنْfrom كُلِّevery أَغَرَّillustrious سَرْطَمِtall and stout
مِنْfrom عَدَدthe multitudes الأَحْياءِthe tribes فِيin مُحْرَنْجَمِa packed gathering
and support from every illustrious, towering man
And support from every bold and fearless man,
from the tribes' multitudes in a packed gathering.
As many as live in Muhranjam,
قَدْindeed عَلِمُواthey have learned أَنَّكَthat you غَيْرُnot تَوْأَمِa twin
تَرْمِيyou shoot وَراءَbeyond قَذْفِهِمْtheir shots وَتَرْتَمِيand hurl yourself
They have learned that you have no twin:
They know you are peerless,
you shoot beyond their shots, and fling yourself
You chase after their missiles and dodge,
وَراءَbeyond جَرْيthe running of السابِقِthe front-runner المُصَمِّمِthe steadfast one
رَمَيْتَyou cast عَنْin defense of عِرْضِكَyour honor رَمْيَthe casting of المِرْجَمِthe stone-hurler
beyond the pace of the steadfast front-runner.
Behind the gallop of the resolute racer,
You cast in defense of your honor as a stone-hurler casts,
You have cast for your honor’s sake like a catapult,
بِحسَبٍwith ancestral honor تَمَّwas perfected وَرَأْيٍand judgment فَدْغَمِweighty
وَعِنْدَand at إِمْرارِthe tight twisting of المُغَارِthe twisted cord المُبْرَمِthe firmly plied
with consummate nobility and weighty judgment.
With due measure, resolved and determined,
And when the twisted, firmly plied cord is tightened,
And when the formidable crises loom,
تَمُدyou extend أَدْراكadded rope lengths القَوِيِّthe strong المُحْكَمِsecurely made
وَتَقْبَلand you embrace الأَخْلاقَmoral qualities بِالتَقَمُّمِby gathering them up
you add lengths to the strong, securely made cord.
You extend the grasp of the strong and firm,
And you embrace virtues, gathering them up.
And accept morals with perseverance,
وَسَطْتَyou stood at the center of عَبْدَAbd القَيْسِal-Qays عِنْدamong الأَنْجُمِthe stars
أَشْراطِهِنَّtheir herald-stars وَالسِماكِand al-Simak المِرْزَمِal-Mirzam
You stood at the heart of Abd al-Qays, among the stars—
You have mediated on behalf of Abdul Qais before the stars,
their herald-stars, and al-Simak al-Mirzam.
Their conditions and the disdainful aloofness,
إِذَاwhen امْرُؤٌa man آخَيْتَهُyou took him as a brother لَمْnot يَنْدَمِregret
وَلَمْand not تَزَلْhave ceased مِنْكَfrom you فُضُولُoverflowing gifts المُنْعِمِthe benefactor
When you take a man as a brother, he does not regret it.
When you befriend a man he has no regrets,
And your overflowing gifts as a benefactor have never ceased
And you have never ceased to bestow favors,

سَبَحْتَyou swam forward مِنْbeyond غَلْوِthe utmost reach of الجَوادِthe steed المِخْدَمِthe swift-footed one
to rain down like dark masses of streaming rain clouds.
Which rain down like the torrents of dripping clouds,
You swam beyond the utmost reach of the swift-footed steed.
You have risen above the excess of the noble steed,
