Layla came by night to a sleeping man,

crossing toward him a broad, low-lying waste.

So, through a dream, she made a lovesick, yearning man sleepless,

    disheveled, scorched, wasted and frail.

While the star guided the stars that followed,

the northern ones, rising and setting,

and Suhayl descended to the lowlands for water, reclining,

like an ʿAsjadī camel approaching the watering places.

And many a tract of land that donned tunics

    of mirage and spreading dust,

when its landmarks floated up in pairs,

you saw beside two an odd one and a fourth,

from the flowing gleam of the forenoon's rippling mirage—

I charged the striding Mahri camels with crossing it.

When they stretched their long, slender necks,

    you saw among them a water-drawer and a bucket-hauler.

When they alternated their far-reaching forelegs,

and their upper forelegs met a sweeping reach,

you thought the desert's landmarks were retreating,

from their forelegs' tugging at the gleaming uplands.

And if the mirage lifted an emerging landmark,

while the mirage tossed it, lowering and raising it,

you took it for a dusky beast galloping lame,

on three legs, or a stud camel mounting a mate.

Summer's heat clothed them in flowing spittle,

and a swirling wind blazed around them in scorching blasts,

with a blaze that scorched even the scorching winds,

when the flaming heat set the pale stones alight.

    يَجْتَبْنَ مِن أَظْلالِها مَخادِعا

    I burdened them with care and a cleaving purpose;

they carved secluded chambers out of its shadows.

It was as though I brought a cutting sword to bear,

on a swift white camel yielding to the swerving rein,

    smooth-headed, with a dripping nape.

As though tar, or thin pitch welling up,

had stained the streams oozing from their flanks,

in midday heats that milked the neck-veins.

As though beneath me were a ranging wild bull, racing,

striped, wearing a dazzling white robe,

cut short, not reaching his shanks,

among wild cows ranging through the pastures,

as though they gazed through face-veils.

He set out at dawn, crossing from one land to another,

feeling the rustling, violent gusts against his skin,

amid a roar that filled the ears.

So he passed his night, watch after watch,

until, when a night spreading itself was stripped away,

its flanks dispersed by the clearing light of day,

he went forth; the wilderness's guest goes forth hungry,

frequenting fresh herbage before he fought.

Until, when he beheld a terrifying threat—

a hound-handler's dogs, and a string with necks outstretched—

they pursued him; he veered away, rushing at ease,

racing away as they scattered rising dust,

after a swift fugitive cleaving the sandy flats.

Yet he had concealed within himself the will to fight,

until, when they caught up with him, eager for prey,

he wheeled against them, stabbing at their joints,

and stabbing their necks and shoulder joints,

gashing and piercing right through their ribs,

leaving, through his rending, their gleaming hides

as gaping rents that sought no patcher.

Nor will you see a valiant combatant

defending himself, when he brandishes a lofty horn,

more steadfast of heart or stronger in defense.

Until he finished off their sixth and their seventh,

    and an eighth—not merely grazed—and a ninth,

and two out of four, sowing

with his rapid stabs into their flanks, certain death.

Until, when they multiplied their howls,

and recoiled as he shook off those beetles,

where he left one gasping and another vomiting,

when he saw them staining the places where they lay,

felled—and he had no skill at wrestling—

they desisted from him, and he headed for the pastures,

alone, like a Himyarite prince, far removed.
