لَقَدْindeed خَشِيتُI feared أَنْthat أَرَىI see جِدَبّاdrought
فيin عامِنَاour year ذاthis بَعْدَafter ماthat اخْضَبّاit grew lush
I have indeed feared that I would see drought
I feared that I would see barrenness
in this year of ours, after it had grown lush.
In our year after it grew old
إِنَّindeed الدَبَىthe locust nymphs فَوْقover المُتُونِthe uplands دَبّاcrawled
وَهَبَّتِand blew الرِيحُthe wind بِمُورٍwith dust هَبّاa blast
Indeed, the locust nymphs crawled over the uplands,
Indeed, the plants above the dunes crawled
and the wind blew in a dust-laden blast,
And the wind blew violently
تَتْرُكُit leaves ماwhat أَبْقَىspared الدَبَىthe locust nymphs سَبْسَبَّاa barren plain
كَأَنَّهُas though it were السَيْلُthe torrent إِذاwhen اسْلَحَبّاextended far onward
leaving what the locust nymphs spared a barren plain,
Leaving what the plants crawled over disturbed
as though it were a torrent sweeping far onward,
As if it were a flood when it receded
أَوْor كَالحَرِيقِlike a fire وافَقَcame upon القَصَبّاthe reeds
والتِبْنَand the straw وَالحَلْفاءَand the halfa grass فَالْتَهَبّاthen blazed up
or like a fire that came upon reeds
Or a fire that met with dry reeds
and straw and halfa grass, then blazed up,
And hay and dry plants so it blazed
حَتَّىuntil تَرَىyou see البُوَيْزِلَthe mature camel (diminutive) الإِرْزَبّاthe stout one

until you see the stout, full-grown camel
Until you see the goats bleating
already shriveled for lack of pasture.
From lack of pasture, so they became emaciated
تُبّاًruin! لأَصْحابِupon the owners of الشَوِيِّthe sheep تُبّاruin!
Ruin upon the owners of sheep—ruin!
Woe to the people of passion, woe
