لَتَقْعُدِنَّyou shall surely sit مَقْعَدَin the place of القَصِيِّthe distant one
مِنِّيَfrom me ذِيpossessing القاذُورَةِfoulness المَقْلِيِّthe despised one
You shall surely sit in an outcast's place,
far from me, foul and despised,
أَوْor تَحْلِفِيyou swear بِرَبِّكِby your Lord العَلِيِّthe Most High
أَنِّيthat I أَبُوam the father of ذَيَّالِكَthat little one الصَبِيِّthe boy
or swear by your Lord Most High
that I am the father of that little boy.
قَدْindeed رابَنِيhe aroused my suspicion بالنَظَرِwith the gaze الرَكِيِّfeeble
وَمُقْلَةٍand an eye كَمُقْلَةِlike the eye of الكُرْكِيِّthe crane
He has aroused my suspicion with his feeble gaze
and an eye like a crane's.
كَأَنَّas though مَتْنَيَّboth sides of my back مِنَfrom النَفِيِّthe water-spray
مَواقِعُlanding-places of الطَيْرِthe birds عَلَىon الصُفِيِّthe smooth stones
It is as though both sides of my back, from the water-spray,
were birds' landing-places on smooth stones,
لِطُولِbecause of the length of إِشْرافِيmy leaning علَىover الطَوِيِّthe stone-lined well
from my long leaning over the stone-lined well.
