إِذَاwhen المصاعِيبُthe untamed stallions ارْتَجَسْنَthey rumbled قَبْقَباhe bellowed
بَغْبَغَةًa gurgling roar مَرّاًat one time وَمَرّاًand at another بَأْبَباhe roared
When the untamed stallions rumble, he bellows,
Gurgling now, and now giving a throaty roar.
وَمِنْand from صَباحٍmorning رامِياًhurling مُجَشَّباcoarse fare
فِإِنْso if رَآنِيhe sees me شاعِرٌa poet تَثَعْلَباhe turns fox-like
And from dawn, hurling coarse fare.
So if a poet sees me, he turns fox-like;
وَإِنْand if حَداهُdrives him on الحِينُdoom أَوْor تَذَأَّباhe turns wolf-like
أَبْصَرَhe sees هِلْقَاماًa huge-gulleted beast إِذَاwhen تَثَأَّباit yawns
And if doom drives him on, or he turns wolf-like,
He sees a huge-gulleted beast when it yawns,
سَرْطاًa gulper فَماso nothing يَمْلأُfills جَوْفاًa belly حَوْأَباcapacious
Wide-mouthed, huge-gulleted, bellowing, vast-bellied,
A gulper whose capacious belly nothing fills.
فَانْطِقso speak بِإِرْبٍwith cunning فَوْقَabove مَنْwhoever تَأَرَّباacts cunningly
وَالإِرْبُand cunning يُدْهِيoutwits خِبَّthe guile مَنْof whoever تَخَبَّباpractices deceit
So speak with cunning beyond whoever acts cunningly;
And cunning outwits the guile of whoever practices deceit.
وَشادَand built عَمْرُوʿAmr لَكَfor you بَيْتاًa house صَلْهَباtowering

And ʿAmr built you a towering house,
With broad-spreading shade, domed.
وَكانَتِand was العِرْسُthe bride الَّتِيwhom تَنَخَّباhe chose

And the bride whom he chose was
Fair-faced, a bearer of male foals to a tall stallion.
