لَمْdid not يَدْرِknow ماwhat الزاكِيthe even-numbered مِنَfrom المُخاسِيthe odd-numbered
ياO أَيُّهَاyou السائِلُthe inquirer عَنْabout نُحاسِيmy stock
He could not tell the even from the odd.
He knew not what was pure from what was foul,
O you who ask about my stock,
O questioner about my brass wares,
عَنِّيaway from me وَلَمّاand not yet يَبْلُغُواthey reach أَشْطاسِيmy farthest bounds
إِنْif كُنْتَyou are مِنconcerning أَمْرِكَyour affair فيin مِسْماسِconfusion
Away from me! They have not yet reached my farthest bounds.
Leave off from me ere they reach my shoe straps,
If you are in confusion about your affairs,
If you are reduced to poverty in your affairs,
فَاسْطُthen thrust عَلَىupon أمِّكَyour mother سَطْوَthe thrusting of الماسِيthe womb-prober
وَكُنْتَand you are مِنْagainst دائِكَyour ailment ذاpossessed of إِفْلاسِlack of means
Then thrust into your mother as a womb-prober would.
Then stretch over your mother the smoothness of the file,
And if you are helpless against your ailment,
And you are made poor by your disease,
فَاسْتَقِئاًthen make yourself vomit بِثَمَرِwith the fruit of القَسْقاسِthe qasqās plant
Then make yourself vomit with the fruit of the qasqās plant.
Then rinse your mouth with the fruit of the gourd.
