وَاضْطَرَّهُand drove it مِنْfrom أَيْمَنٍright-hand sides وَشُؤمِand left-hand sides
صَرَّةَa loud cry صَرْصارِshrill screeching العِتاقِthe noble birds القُتْمِthe dusky-gray ones
And he drove it from right and left,
And he was forced from good fortune and ill,
A shrill screech of the noble, dusky birds—
Like the hissing of a viper in its den.

A practiced hunter, trained on fresh flesh,
Attacking the wounded with flesh tearing claws,
Dusky as a boulder on the day of stone-hurling.
As muddy as granite on the day of stoning.
إِذَاwhen تَقْضَّىhe swoops down مِنْfrom أَعالِيthe tops of اللُجْمِthe crags

When he swoops from the tops of the crags,
When it descends from the heights of the mound,
He folds his two wings, darting like an arrow.
It folds its wings, like an arrow being drawn.
فَهُنَّso they صَرْعَىlie slain مِنْfrom هَوِيِّthe plunge of النَحْمِthe rasping hawk

So they lie slain by the rasping hawk’s plunge,
They are then prey to the swooping eagle,
From one with hooked talons and an arched beak.
With the sharpest beak and prominent chin.
يَخْتَطِفhe snatches الأَرْواحَsouls قَبْلَbefore اللَطْمِthe blow

He snatches souls before the blow;
Snatching souls before the blow,
On him is spray from the bleeding victim’s blood.
With spattering blood from the slain.

بِفِعْلِfor the deeds of قَوْمِيmy people فِيin الغِنَىwealth وَالعُدْمِand poverty
I shall surely offer praise, truthfully, from what I know,
I swear truthfully with my knowledge,
For my people’s deeds in wealth and want.
Regarding the deeds of my people in luxury and poverty.

And they, when the day of the melee presses hard,
And when the day of crowding clashes,
And the shock splits the mountains of the clash,
And the collision shatters mountains of resistance.

At every hissing viper in its den.

And after the croaking raven snarling,
Is to bite the napes with a ravenous, rending bite.
The biting of snakes with tearing fangs.
