And a wasteland whose echo calls out 'Hind!'

    Night awakens longing over it,

like a sorrowing woman returning at dusk bereft.

There the heat scorches the Mahri she-camels on their way to water,

    تَفْصِد أَوْشال الذَفارَى فَصْدا

    with the searing midday heat they endure;

sweat trickles from behind their ears as though blood were being let.

The mounts' night-march kept on relentlessly,

while the night slipped away in a swift, unbroken course,

where the people of Najd named it Najd,

until it wore down the sturdy camel and exhausted the strong one—

the repeated movement of hooves that brings distance near,

with legs that drove pale-feathered ostriches before them.

As though the sprawling offshoots of the tracks,

when the road in the wilderness turns ash-gray,

were straps expertly cut by a Meccan.

And if the openings in their night close,

they turn away from its nose—or it turns

away from them, riding bareback over naked expanses,

as the headlong journey toward water stretches on.

As though beneath me were a solitary beast with markings,

hastening ahead of night and a piercing north wind

to arṭā bushes and sand-dunes that ward off the cold.

It outstrips the mounts at a swift pace and a brisk trot,

as you strip the sheath from a Yemeni sword's breast.

    تَعْمِي مَعَانِيها اللُغامَ الجَعْدا

    It drives away blame and brings praise near;

its meanings obscure the thick, clotted mouth-foam.

Let no peoples make straight for me:

they have shown faces darkened with rage,

    sick, though big-bellied and large-livered.

May the swelling of one stricken with gland disease never heal!

When the clash of rajaz verse grows fierce,

you know that the greatest numbers

and the strongest pillar, should you press against it,

are ours when the day of defending honor stretches long,

and the muster spreads in days of hardship.

And if the cord-twisters tighten their binding

on a day of battle, or plunge into earnest struggle,

and we find no escape from a mighty undertaking,

we, so long as we see no prudent course,

answer people's trouble with trouble of our own.

And whomever we sought, boldly and with guile,

to force into bondage became a slave.

You see, when a man of noble lineage makes ready,

    among us a guiding messenger, and praise;

through him we surmounted the heights and attained glory.

And our uncle is the finest uncle in bounty—

Qays, when the milking vessel needs replenishing.

    The mightiest hosts in battle,

and the staunchest protectors of pledges and covenants:

that one—and my Saʿd, the finest of those named Saʿd.

Indeed, if you weigh Maʿadd against us,

we equal Maʿadd in numbers and good fortune,

and in lineage, reckoned on the day of rivalry.

And if we wrong people, we say, 'Deliberately.'

So, you who seek a monstrous deed,

if you hope to take us on, then butt against Uhud!

Indeed, from every pooled provision we have a share:

    from al-Ribāb, milk and support,

and our ʿAmr brings us aid and defense,

and the house of Zayd, an advance party and a delegation,

lion-hearted, with lions from every people.

You see among them, if one seeks a deed of domination,

necks unyielding with the hardness of their might,

and great, mature camels that never complain of rough treatment.

    إِذا إحْتَضَرْنَ يَوْمَ زَأدٍ زَأْدا

    They snap the necks of mighty stallions clean through;

when they appear on a day of terror—sheer terror—

you see only a massive, thick-set breeding male,

a thick-necked lion, full-bodied and supple of flesh.

Threatening shouts only increase his fury

when he roars again and swells up,

while they rage with savage, frenzied anger.

I thought he had been coated in a rose-red hue

by his painter, except for tufts or matted locks.

As though his two fangs, when sharpened

against the other pair, were two daggers turned back

into a massive, swollen frame whose joints are unyielding,

and a head like a rock that has met another rock.

When his two neck-veins swell, they jut apart,

    أَعانَ حَيْداهُ جَبِيناً صَلْدا

    a neck-side like a punting pole, towering and rigid;

his twin skull-ridges support a smooth, hard forehead.

They batter the loud-gurgling roarer with heavy thrusts,

    towering, thunderous, and driving back.

You hear the ground thud beneath them.

And if you see a shoulder and an upper arm

of theirs, densely heaped with compact flesh,

you think their hides contain birth-fluid,

from the shedding of swellings that crept by night.
