I said, when a listener fell silent:

I shall surely offer praise that grows,

To a cousin who has always been generous to all,

To a young man from whom blame is driven away

    By glory and ever-ample strength.

O Nasr, God has indeed perfected

His blessing in full for whoever comes.

O Nasr, I have always been anxious:

I fear—and God wards off whatever causes worry—

Misfortune for you and many calamities.

Do not look to a harsh maternal uncle or a paternal uncle.

And know, when trouble presses hard,

That certain peoples have a father and a mother.

O Nasr, indeed the deaf serpent

    يَقْتُلُ قَتْلاً أَنْ يَشَمَّ شَمّا

    Gnashes a fang and spits out venom;

It kills outright at a mere sniff.

So ride with resolve, armored and turbaned,

And never die in an obscure land.

For when the flood in the valley overflows,

It lays bare the roots of trees and sweeps them away.

You have indeed guided the rightly guided straight ahead.
