عَدَدْتُI counted قَوْمِيmy people كَعَدِيدِlike the number of الطَيْسِthe abundant sand
عَدَدْتُ قَوْمِي كَعَدِيدِ الطَيْسِ
إذwhen ذَهَبَhad gone القَوْمُthe people الكِرامُthe noble لَيْسِيexcept me
إذ ذَهَبَ القَوْمُ الكِرامُ لَيْسِي
I counted my tribe as numberless as the sands,
I counted my people, as numerous as grains of sand,
when all the noble men had gone—save me.
when the noble folk had gone, all but me.
