I dealt on credit with أَرْوَىArwa وَالدُيُونُand debts تُقْضَىare repaid
فَمَطَلَتْthen she delayed repayment بَعْضاًsome وَأَدَّتْand she paid بَعْضَاsome
I dealt with Arwa on credit, and debts are repaid.
She delayed part of it and paid part,
وَهْيand she تَرَىsees ذاa man with حاجَةٍneed مُؤْتَضَّاhard-pressed
ذاa man with مَعْضٍanguish لَولَاif only يَرُدُّhe could repel المَعْضَاthe anguish
Though she saw a needy man hard-pressed,
A man in anguish—if only he could ward it off.
فَقُلْتُso I said قَوْلاًwords عَرَبِيَّاArabic غَضَّاfresh
لَوْif كَانَit were خَرْزاًstitching فِيin الكُلاَthe kidneys ماnot بَضَّاit leaked
So I spoke words in fresh, pure Arabic:
Had it been stitching in the kidneys, it would not have leaked.
إِنْif كانَthere is خَيْرٌgood مِنكِfrom you مُسْتَنَضَّاto be drawn out
فَاقْنَىْthen be modest فَشَرfor the worst القَوْلِspeech ماthat which أَمَضَّاcauses pain
If any good can be drawn from you,
Then be modest: the worst words are those that sting.
أَمَاdo you not تَرَىsee دَهْراًTime حَنَانِيbent me حَفْضَاa pack camel
أَطْرَthe bending by الصَناعَيْنِthe two craftsmen العَرِيشَthe bower القَعْضَاsagging
Do you not see Time has bent me like a pack camel,
As two craftsmen bend a sagging bower?
مِنْfrom بَعْدِafter جَذْبِيmy striding المِشْيَةَthe gait الجِيَضَّيswaggering
فِيin سَلْوَةٍcarefree ease عِشْنَاwe lived بِذاكَin that أُبْضَاfor an age
After I once strode with a swaggering gait,
In carefree ease—we lived that way an age—
خِدْنَa companion to اللَّوَاتِيthe women who يَقْتَضِبْنَcut sprigs of النُعْضَاnuʿd shrubs
فَقَدْindeed أُفْدّيI would ransom مِرْجَماًa ground-pounding camel مُنْقضَّاplunging swiftly
A companion to women cutting nuʿd shrubs.
I would indeed ransom a pounding, plunging camel,
بِمَهْمَهٍin a trackless desert يَبْرِىwears away الذُرىthe humps وَالنَحْضَاand the flesh
مِنَof المَهَارَىthe Mahri camels تَحْتَbeneath قَيْظsummer heat أَغْضاscorching
In a trackless waste that wears away humps and flesh
Of Mahri camels beneath scorching summer heat,
أَخْرَجَit drew out مِنْهاfrom them عَرَقاًsweat مُرْفَضَّاstreaming
يَخْبِطْنَthey tread رَمْضىwith scorched feet بِالحِدابِover the ridges الرَمْضاsun-scorched
Which drew streaming sweat from them.
They tread with scorched feet over burning ridges,
إِذَاwhen امْتَطَيْنَاwe mounted نِقْضَةًa travel-worn she-camel وَنِقْضاand a travel-worn he-camel
أَصْهَبtawny أَجْرَىset slipping نِسْعَهُits saddle-strap وَالغَرْضاand the girth
When we mount a travel-worn she-camel and he-camel,
A tawny beast whose saddle-strap and girth were set slipping
طُولُthe length of التَهاوِيheadlong travel عُصَباًin bands وَرَفْضاand scattered groups
تَعْوِيtwists البُرَىthe nose-rings مُسْتَوْفِضاتٍhurrying وَفْضاat speed
By long, headlong travel, in bands and scattered groups.
Twisting their nose-rings, they hurry at speed,
وَالخِمْسُand the five-day watering stage ناجٍhastening لاnot يُرِيدُseeks الخَفْضاease
إِذَاwhen اعْتَسَفْناwe went cross-country رَهْوَةa rise أَوْor غَمْضاa hollow
And the five-day watering stage speeds on, seeking no ease.
When we strike cross-country over a rise or hollow,
فَيْفاًa wide desert plain كَأَنَّas though آلَهُits mirage المُبْيَضّاwhitened
مُلاءُsheets غَسّالa washerman أَجادperfected الرَحْضاthe washing
A wide desert plain, its whitened mirage like
A washerman's sheets, washed to perfection,
عَنَّىwearied المَهَارَىthe Mahri camels بُعْدُهُits distance وَأَنْضاand wore them thin
جاوَزْتُهُI crossed it بِالْقَوْمِwith the company حَتَّىuntil أَفْضَىit brought out
Its distance wearied the Mahri camels and wore them thin.
I crossed it with the company, until it brought them out
بِهِمْwith them وَأَمْضَىand drove onward سَفَرٌa journey ماas أَمْضَىit drove onward
And carried them onward—a journey that drove on and on.
O you who utter worthless words,
إِنَّاindeed we إِذَاwhen نادَىcalled مُنادٍa summoner حَضّاurging action
وَجَدْتَyou find فِينَاin us مِرَّةًfirm strength وَنَقْضاand unravelling
Indeed, when a summoner calls to spur us on,
You find in us firm strength and the power to unravel.
أَصْبَحhave become أَعْداءُthe enemies of تَمِيمٍTamim مَرْضَىsick
ماتُواthey died جَوىًof consuming anguish وَالمُفْلِتُونَand those who escaped جَرْضَىchoking
Tamim's enemies have fallen sick;
They died of anguish, and those who escaped are choking.
إِنَّindeed تَمِيماًTamim لاnot تُباليcares about البُغْضاhatred
مِنfor أَجْلthe reason أَنَّاthat we are المالِئُونthose who fill الأَرضْاthe earth
Indeed, Tamim pays no heed to hatred,
Because we are the ones who fill the earth,
طُولاًa vast reach تَغَشَّىcovering طُولَهاits length وَالعَرْضاand its breadth
تَرَىyou see إِذَاwhen شَدَّtightens الأُمُورَaffairs النَقْضَىcrises
With a reach that covers its length and breadth.
You see, when crises knot up affairs,
مِنَّاfrom us قُرُوماًmighty camel-stallions يَقْتصِلْنَcut through العَضّاtough browse
يَجْمَعْنَthey combine زَأْراًroaring وَهَدِيراًand bellowing مَخْضاchurning
Mighty camel-stallions among us, cutting through tough browse,
Combining a roar with a churning bellow,
فيamong عَلِكَاتٍsturdy she-camels يَعْتَلِينَrising high النَهضاthe flesh
جَرَّتْcarried to term تِماماًfull-term young لَمْnot تُخَنّقْstrangled جَهْضاmiscarried young
Amid sturdy she-camels, high in flesh,
That bore full-term calves, not choked, miscarried young.
يَخْبِطْنَthey strike خَبْطاًblows مشْدِحَاwide-swinging وَرَضّاand crushing
بِمُطلَقاتٍwith unbound legs لَمْnot تُعَلَّمwere taught أَبْضاfettering
They pound with wide-swinging blows and crushing force,
With unbound legs that never learned the fetter.
وَإِنْand if وَهَىweakens الدِينُthe faith شَدَدْنَاwe tighten القَبْضاthe grip
عَلَىon المُعَاصِينَthe disobedient وَنَجْزِيand we repay القَرْضاthe loan
And if the faith weakens, we tighten our grip
On the disobedient, and repay the loan.
قَوْماًa people وَأَقْواماًand peoples نُعِيرُwe lend الغَرْضاthe target
إِنَّاindeed we إِذَاwhen قُدْنَاwe lead لِقَوْمٍagainst a people عَرِضْاa vast host
To one people and many, we offer ourselves as a target.
Indeed, when we lead a vast host against a people,
لَمْnot نُبْقِwe leave مَنْamong بَغْيthe aggression of الأَعادِيthe enemies عِضَّاa crafty foe
نَشْذِبُwe cut foes away عَنْfrom خِنْدَفَKhindif حَتَّىuntil تَرْضاshe is content
We leave no crafty foe amid our enemies' aggression.
We cut foes away from Khindif until she is content,
وَلَيْسَand is not دِينُthe religion of اللَّهِGod بِالْمُعَضّاin a divided state
إِنَّindeed لَنَاwe have هَوَّاسَةًa trampling host عِرَبْضاmassive and fierce
And God's religion is not to be dismembered.
Indeed, we have a trampling host, massive and fierce:
ثَهْلانَThahlan أَوْor دَمْخَDamkh الحِمَىthe preserve لارْفَضّاwould surely crumble
أَوْor رُكْنَthe flank of سَلْمَىSalma أَوor أَجَاAja لانْقَضَّاwould surely collapse
Thahlan, or Damkh of the preserve, would crumble,
Or Salma's flank, or Aja, would collapse,
أَوْor زُلْنَthey would shift فىِamid مُسْتَرجِفَاتٍshuddering upheavals نَفْضاin violent shaking
نُذِلُّwe subdue بِالْوَطْءِby trampling المَكانَthe ground الدَحْضاslippery
Or shift away amid shuddering, shaking upheavals.
We subdue slippery ground by trampling it,
وَنُورِدُand we bring to water المُسْتَورِدِينَthose seeking water الحَمْضاbitter salt-browse
وَالنَبْلُand the arrows تَهْويhurtle down خَطَأًmissing وَحَبْضاand falling short
And lead those seeking water to bitter salt-browse,
While arrows hurtle down, missing or falling short,
قَفْحاًsmashing blows عَلَىupon الهَامِthe heads وَبَجّاًand gashing وخْضاpiercing thrusts
أُولاَكَthose يَحْمُونَprotect المُصَاصَthe purest stock المَحْضاunmixed
Smashing heads, gashing and piercing.
Those men defend the pure, unmixed stock,
فيin العِدِّthe unfailing spring لَمْnot يُقْدَحْwas scooped out ثِماداًscant pooled water بَرْضاa mere trickle
At an unfailing spring, not scooped from scant, trickling pools.
