أَسْقَىmay He water الإِلَهُGod عُدَواتِthe banks الوَادِيthe valley
وَجَوْفَهُand its hollow كُلَّevery مُلِثٍّlingering raincloud غادِيcoming in the morning
May God water the valley’s banks
The God watered the valleys' slopes
and its hollow with every lingering morning raincloud,
And filled each winding ravine that flowed
كُلevery أَجشَّdeeply rumbling حالِكintensely dark السَوادِin blackness
ماnot كانَit was إِلَّاbut طَلَقَfreely giving الأهْمادِthe barren lands
every rumbling cloud, pitch-black,
Every dark fate that befell was but
nothing but freely showering the barren lands.
A loosening of the tent ropes
وَكَرَّناand we returned بِالأَغْرُبِwith the great buckets الجِيادِthe fine ones
عَلَىto رَكِيَّاتِthe wells بَنِيthe sons of زيادِZiyad
And we returned with the fine, great buckets
And we attacked with the noblest horses
to the wells of Banu Ziyad,
Upon the riding camels of the Banu Ziyad
حَتَّىuntil تَحاجَزْنَthey held back عَنِfrom الرُوّادِthe water-seekers
تَحاجُزَa holding back الرِيِّsatiety from drinking وَلَمْand not تَكادِnearly doing so
until they held back from the water-seekers,
Until they were cut off from those who came to water
as the sated hold back, though they scarcely did.
As the wind is cut off, and almost fades
