Indeed we, when war's fang is sharpened,

And its teeth grind in the roots of its neck,

Drive it back, its hook blunted,

With forest lions, their thicket in their hands—

A thicket of spear-reeds with long, slender joints,

Massive and strong, their necks thick,

Their stubborn ones enduring long beyond maturity,

    Quivering, their shaking making them

More supple when their spearheads lodge.

And the horses gallop, their sides supple,

Like pregnant she-camels gladdened by their pasture,

Whose mating has spared them from slaughter.

They spent the day on land whose grasses towered

From spring rains, its flies buzzing loudly.

Indeed, whenever I visit a band,

An unjust one whose abuse has pleased me,

I abuse them in earnest and do not fear them,

Until their dogs are seen retreating into their dens.

When the tails of rhymes are wound up,

You find them with their doors flung open,

Coming forth, their ravines pouring them out.
