طسنٌTusun لهfor him فيin المجدglory فضلُthe distinction of إمارهْprincely rank
طسنٌ له في المجد فضلُ إمارهْ
وعليهand upon him منfrom علمthe banner of الوقارِdignity أمَارهa sign
وعليه من علم الوقارِ أمَاره
Tusun has the distinction of princely rank in glory;
He has the privilege of glory as his principle
And he bears a sign from dignity's banner.
And the sign of dignity and composure as his symbol
شهمٌnoble-hearted تهذبَgrew refined فيin العلاgreatness منfrom مهدِهِhis cradle
شهمٌ تهذبَ في العلا من مهدِهِ
وقضَىand he fulfilled بميدانٍin the arena of العلاeminence أوْطارهhis desires
وقضَى بميدانٍ العلا أوْطاره
A noble-hearted man, refined in greatness from his cradle,
A magnanimous person refined in sublime virtues from the cradle
And he fulfilled his desires in the arena of eminence.
And spent his life in the field of sublime virtues
يحويhe possesses الفصاحةَeloquence والبلاغةَand rhetoric والبراعand excellence (continued)
يحوي الفصاحةَ والبلاغةَ والبراع
ةَcompletion of 'excellence' واليراعةَand the reed pen عزّةًdignity ومهارهand skill
ةَ واليراعةَ عزّةً ومهاره
He possesses eloquence, rhetoric, and excel-
He encompasses eloquence, rhetoric, skill, dexterity
lence, and the reed pen, with dignity and skill.
Dignity, and adeptness as his hallmarks
أمضىhe spent الدُّجىthe night's darkness سهراًawake ليظفرso he might attain بالرجاwhat is hoped for
أمضى الدُّجى سهراً ليظفر بالرجا
صقلhe honed الحِجىthe intellect إذas جازَhe passed through خيرthe finest تجارهtrade
صقل الحِجى إذ جازَ خير تجاره
He spent the dark hours awake to attain his hopes;
He spent nights sleepless seeking success
He honed his intellect as he completed the finest trade.
And honed his mind as he reaped the fruits of his great trade
نفسٌa soul لهاto it ينقادُhe submits وهيand it is زكيةٌpure
نفسٌ لها ينقادُ وهي زكيةٌ
منfrom حيثwhere يعصىhe disobeys فيin الهوىdesire الأمّارهthe commanding soul
من حيث يعصى في الهوى الأمّاره
He submits to a soul that is pure,
A pure soul obedient to him as it is immaculate
While defying the commanding soul in matters of desire.
From where passions are rebellious against higher ideals
فيin دولةِthe realm of الآدابletters صارhe became مؤيداًa supporter
في دولةِ الآداب صار مؤيداً
وأَدامand he continued فيهin it ليلَهhis night ونهارهand his day
وأَدام فيه ليلَه ونهاره
In the realm of letters he became a champion,
In the state of arts and letters he became a stalwart
And devoted his nights and days to it.
Prolonging his days and nights therein
وقدand indeed اكتسىhe clothed himself بالرشدِwith sound judgment أبهىthe most splendid حلةٍrobe
وقد اكتسى بالرشدِ أبهى حلةٍ
منfrom حيثwhere يصرفُhe spends فيin العلاeminence دينارهhis dinar
من حيث يصرفُ في العلا ديناره
And he donned sound judgment's most splendid robe,
Having worn the dress of righteousness in its finest forms
As he spends his dinar in pursuit of eminence.
Where he spends his talents in the heights of virtue
وقدand indeed اصطفاهhe chose him خديوthe Khedive of مصرَEgypt محبةًout of affection
وقد اصطفاه خديو مصرَ محبةً
وحباهand he bestowed on him صفوَthe choicest صهارةٍmarriage alliance واختارهand chose him
وحباه صفوَ صهارةٍ واختاره
And the Khedive of Egypt chose him out of affection,
The Khedive of Egypt chose him out of affection
And granted him a choice marriage alliance, selecting him
And endowed him with the elite and the elect
لكريمةfor a noble lady زهراءradiant تاجa crown of محاسنٍcharms
لكريمة زهراء تاج محاسنٍ
قدindeed أخجلتْshe put to shame زهرَthe flowers of الرياضthe gardens نضارهfreshness
قد أخجلتْ زهرَ الرياض نضاره
For a radiant noble lady, a crown of charms,
The noble Luminary, crown of beauties
Whose freshness has put the gardens' blossoms to shame.
Who shamed the blossoms of gardens in brilliance
وازدادand he grew إقبالاًin favor ونالand gained معزةesteem
وازداد إقبالاً ونال معزة
فيin ضمنthe midst of زُهرِbright كواكبٍstars سيارهwandering
في ضمن زُهرِ كواكبٍ سياره
And he grew in favor and won esteem
Continuously drawing near, gaining favor
Among the bright, wandering stars,
Amidst a bouquet of twinkling stars
بسعادةٍwith happiness وسيادةٍand lordship أبديّةٍeverlasting
بسعادةٍ وسيادةٍ أبديّةٍ
قدماًfrom of old وقدand indeed أعلىraised العزيزُthe mighty ruler منارهhis beacon
قدماً وقد أعلى العزيزُ مناره
With happiness and everlasting lordship,
With eternal good fortune and supremacy
From of old; and the mighty ruler has raised his beacon.
As the Almighty heightened his beacon
للهto God (expressing admiration) منhe who أحياrevived مآثرَthe noble deeds of بيتهhis house
لله من أحيا مآثرَ بيته
وأدامand perpetuated فيthrough طولthe length of المدىtime آثارهits legacy
وأدام في طول المدى آثاره
God bless him who revived the glories of his house,
Praise be to God who revived the glories of his house
And kept its legacy alive through the long span of time.
And perpetuated its imprints through the ages
ورثَhe inherited المفاخرglories كابراًas a noble heir عنfrom كابرa noble forebear
ورثَ المفاخر كابراً عن كابر
حتىuntil غدتْthey became بينamong الأنامِhumankind شِعارهhis emblem
حتى غدتْ بين الأنامِ شِعاره
He inherited glories, a noble heir to noble forebears,
Inheriting consecutive glories from forebears
Until they became his emblem among humankind.
Until they became his creed amongst people
شهمٌnoble-hearted فخيمٌaugust قدرُهhis worth ومقامهand his standing
شهمٌ فخيمٌ قدرُه ومقامه
كفءٌworthy لدستof the seat of سياسةٍstatecraft وإدارهand administration
كفءٌ لدست سياسةٍ وإداره
A noble-hearted man, august in worth and standing,
A lofty and noble person, his worth and status
Worthy of the seat of statecraft and administration.
