قل لمن خاس بعهدي

أي ذنبٍ قد جنيته

Say to the one who broke my covenant:

Tell whoever reproached me,

What sin have I committed?

What crime have I committed?

صُنتُ سر الحب جهدي

في ضميري وطويتُه

في ضميري وطويتُه

I guarded love's secret as best I could,

I protected the secret of love with all my might,

Within my inmost self, and kept it hidden,

And kept it buried in my conscience.

حذَر الواشين والعذال

حذَر الواشين والعذال

في أمر نويته

في أمر نويته

For fear of tale-bearers and reproachers,

I was wary of the faultfinders and slanderers,

In an affair I had resolved upon.

In a matter I intended.

فجفاني غير آسٍ

فجفاني غير آسٍ

بيد أني ما قليتُه

بيد أني ما قليتُه

Then he shunned me without regret,

Yet I was abandoned, though not disconsolate,

Yet I never hated him.

Despite being betrayed.

فله ما شاء مني

فله ما شاء مني

فبروحي قد فديته

فبروحي قد فديته

So he may have whatever he wishes from me,

So let him have what he wants from me,

For I have ransomed him with my soul.

سوف لا أنسى غراما

بدم القلب سقيته

I shall never forget a love

I shall not forget love

That I watered with my heart's blood.

That I have watered with the blood of my heart.

هات لي كاساً وكاسا

هات لي كاساً وكاسا

عليّ بالسكرة أنسى

عليّ بالسكرة أنسى

Bring me a cup, and another cup.

Bring me a cup, nay cups,

Give me drunkenness, that I may forget.

Intoxicate me with wine so I forget

إسقني حتى أرى من

إسقني حتى أرى من

سكريَ الواحد خمسا

سكريَ الواحد خمسا

Give me drink until I see, through

Give me drink until I see

My drunkenness, one as five.

One as five in my drunkenness

اسقني حتى تراني

اسقني حتى تراني

صرت لا أملك حسا

صرت لا أملك حسا

Give me drink until you see me

Become unable to feel a thing.

As one who has lost all senses

أفرغ الدنّ ولا تبقِ

أفرغ الدنّ ولا تبقِ

بهذا الجيب فلسا

بهذا الجيب فلسا

Empty the wine jar, and do not leave

Empty the cask, and leave

A copper coin in this pocket.

Not a penny in this pocket

لك ما شئت من المال

لك ما شئت من المال

ولا تبخل فتأسى

ولا تبخل فتأسى

You may have whatever money you wish,

You may have what you wish of money

And do not stint, lest you grieve.

Do not be stingy and grieve me

أنا طلّقت وقاري

أنا طلّقت وقاري

ورأيتُ العقل حبسا

ورأيتُ العقل حبسا

I have divorced my dignity,

I have dismissed my dignity

And found reason to be a prison.

And seen reason as captivity

كلنا يفنى ولن تبقي

كلنا يفنى ولن تبقي

يدُ الأيامِ نفسا

يدُ الأيامِ نفسا

We all perish, and never will

We all pass away, and none will remain

The hand of days spare a single soul.

At the hands of time, not a soul

هكذا وعظُ الليال

هكذا وعظُ الليال

وكفى بالدهر درسا

وكفى بالدهر درسا

Such is the admonition of the nights,

Thus the nights preach

And time is lesson enough.

And time's passage is lesson enough

فاغنم العمر ولا

فاغنم العمر ولا

تترك بهذا العيش أنسا

تترك بهذا العيش أنسا

So make the most of life, and do not

So enjoy life, and do not

Forgo any pleasure in this life.

Neglect the joys of this existence
