O our nights in the valley of al-Salt, indeed,

The memory of you revisited my heart, and it yearned.

Longing stirred me toward the garden

Before which I used to meet the soft-voiced gazelle.

How can I forget a night in its shade,

When we promised to meet, and so we met?

The garden embraced us, joyful and laughing,

And the great trees bent over us and gave shelter.

    Here the brook sings joyfully,

And there the birds sang among the branches.

And the blossoms of the hills, in ecstasy,

    Dance like lovely women, swaying.

And the east wind draws the supple branches close,

So among the great trees you see one branch embrace another.

And the moist breeze drifts before dawn,

Bearing away the echo of our talk of love.

A wedding celebration—Time has never witnessed

Its equal in the grove for rapturous song and melody.

Stolen moments passed while Time was heedless,

Granting us in love all we wished for.

So we spent our night in bliss,

And we parted, faithful to our two vows.

A dream passed, and nothing remained but

The searing gusts of longing in the tormented heart.

Within my breast is a throbbing heart that, whenever

The days of youth and love stir its longing, goes mad.

How often I stayed awake at night, reviving their memory,

Restless in bed, not closing an eyelid.

We have remembered them despite the vast distance of separation,

And cherished them, even if they had forgotten us.

Is there a path to reunion, after

The dwelling has grown distant and they and we have parted?

And will companionship return to the valley, and will

We meet in the garden beneath the great trees late at night?
