Is it my blood spilled upon your cheeks, O my hope,

or wine the earliest ages hid away?

No, it is my blood: the heart was fatally struck by the anguish

of passion’s arrow, aimed by wide eyes.

A wound is in my heart; no death comes to rescue me

from misery, nor does this wound heal.

And I do not aspire to win the woman who slays me,

nor have I any hope of a longed-for union.

O God, this love has left me no breath of life,

and deepened my anguish, while the paths grew narrow for me.

O God, its burning pangs have torn my liver apart,

and sicknesses and ailments have weakened my mind.

O God, dispel with light from You what has crowded

upon me—the darkness that ignorance has brought.

For I do not love passion—no! Nor has it enthralled

my soul; my passion is truth and work.
