1. أناشدُك اللَه يا قاسيه

    أأنتِ لعهد الهوى ناسيه

    I beseech you by God, O cruel one:

    Have you forgotten love's covenant?

  2. نسيت كأن لم يكن بيننا

    لقاءٌ فحطّمتِ آماليه

    You forgot, as though there had never been between us

    a meeting—and so you shattered my hopes.

  3. بعينيك شمت انطفاء الهوى

    وقد خبت الشعلة الساميه

    In your eyes I discerned love's dying out,

    and the lofty flame had already faded.

  4. أما تذكرين عهود الصبا

    وأيامنا الحلوة الماضيه

    Do you not recall the days of youth,

    and our sweet days gone by?

  5. وأنت فديتك يا منيتي

    على القلب آمرة ناهيه

    And you—may I be your ransom, O my heart's desire—

    ruled my heart, commanding and forbidding.

  6. ويجمعنا الروض عند الأصيل

    وفي ظل سرحته العاليه

    And the garden would gather us in the late afternoon,

    and in the shade of its tall spreading tree.

  7. وكنت أبثُّك نجوى الغرا

    م وأشرحُ وجدي واشجانيه

    And I would confide to you love's whispered secrets,

    and unfold my passion and my sorrows.

  8. وكم كنت تشكين مرّ الفرا

    ق وتذرينَ أدمعك الهاميه

    And how often you would lament the bitterness of parting,

    and shed your streaming tears:

  9. لآليء لكنّ حبّاتها

    تجف على حر أنفاسيه

    pearls, yet their beads

    would dry in the heat of my breath.

  10. مجالسنا في ضفاف الغدير

    خلت فهي موحشة خاويه

    Our meeting places on the banks of the pool

    have fallen empty; they are desolate and bare.

  11. وقد وجم الروض لا نبته

    نضير ولا طيره شاديه

    And the garden has fallen silent: its vegetation is not

    verdant, nor are its birds singing.

  12. تسائل عنا أزاهيرُه

    وأطياره النسمة الساريه

    Its blossoms ask about us,

    and its birds question the passing breeze.

  13. هواك أثار بقلبي الأسى

    وجار على كبدي الداميه

    Love for you stirred sorrow in my heart,

    and dealt harshly with my bleeding liver.

  14. يهزّني الشوق اما ادّكرت

    وتستعر المهجة الظاميه

    Longing shakes me whenever I remember,

    and my thirsty heart flares up.

  15. أراك بطرف الخيال الجموح

    كأنك ما زلت لي وافيه

    I see you through the eye of unbridled imagination,

    as though you were still faithful to me.

  16. فأنت بقلبي وفي خاطري

    وفي العين نائية دانيه

    For you are in my heart and in my thoughts,

    and in my eyes, distant yet near.

  17. شفاهك كم تستثير الجوى

    وتحلم بالقبل الدافيه

    Your lips—how often they stir lovesick anguish,

    and dream of warm kisses.

  18. فادنوا إليها أروّي الصدى

    وعيناك في نشوة غافيه

    So I draw near them, slaking my thirst,

    while your eyes drowse in rapture.

  19. وتُسكرني قبلات الهوى

    ترفُّ على الشفةِ القانيه

    And love's kisses intoxicate me,

    fluttering upon the crimson lip.

  20. واغفو على حلمٍ فاتن

    تهدهده النظرة الساجيه

    And I doze upon an enchanting dream,

    rocked by the tranquil gaze.

  21. ولحظك كم ذا يتيه الخيال

    بآفاقه الرحبة النائيه

    And your glance—how far imagination wanders

    in its vast, distant horizons!

  22. مضت تلكمُ اللحظات العذابُ

    وابقت سعيراً باحشائيه

    Those sweet moments have passed,

    and left a raging fire in my entrails.

  23. فيا قلب صبرا فإن الحياة

    على الغدر مطبوعة باقيه

    So, O heart, be patient, for life

    is stamped with treachery, and remains so.

  24. بلوت الزمان واهل الزمان

    وترجو الوفاء من الغانيه

    You have tested time and its people,

    yet you hope for faithfulness from the beautiful woman?
