He came with the dawn, and in his glance
lingered remnants of his night's dreams.
Were the remnants of dreams from his night

يصمي قلوب الناس من خطرته
He struts amid them, knowing how
He struts with pride for he keeps
his swaying gait slays people's hearts.
The hearts of people safe from his harm

لما أحس القلب من رقته
If he walked upon my beating heart,
If he were to walk upon my eyelids
the heart would not feel him, so gentle is he.
My heart would not feel his gentleness

But the sword of the glance from his eyelid
But the sword of his glance from his eyelids
is deadlier in its strike than a keen-edged sword.
Is sharper than an Indian blade in its killing

My patience is spent in love for a graceful youth;
My patience in love for him is spent
weakness and strength are among his weapons.
Both strength and weakness are his qualities

Be gentle, beloved of my soul! This is the extent
Gently, love of my soul, this is the extent

Let the souls of humankind be ransom for his eyes,
The souls of all creation he ransomed
for the world's enchantment springs from his charm.
So the magical world is from his charm

I've grown, I'll not be saved from his saliva
