قدindeed ضاعفhas doubled البينseparation حزنيmy sorrow
Sing—may I be your ransom—sing!
Sing—may I be your ransom—sing.
Parting has doubled my sorrow,
Separation has doubled my sorrow.
وقرّحand has made sore الدمعtears جفنيmy eyelid
وبتّand I spent the night أشكوI complain of التجنيunjust treatment
and tears have made my eyelid sore;
And tears have made my eyelid raw.
all night I have lamented cruel wrong.
And I spent the night lamenting unjust treatment.
غنّsing لعليperhaps I may أسلوI find solace
بانتhave grown distant ديارٌhomes وأهلand kin
Sing, that perhaps I may find solace;
Sing, perhaps I may find solace.
my homeland and my people have gone far away.
Homes and kin have grown distant.
ياoh ليتَwould that يجمعbe reunited شملthe company
ويسمَعُand might hear الصبّthe lovesick one لحنيmy melody
If only my scattered circle could be reunited,
Oh, would that we were reunited,
and the lovesick one could hear my song.
And the lovesick one could hear my melody.

O groves of the two Nayrabs,
The groves of the two luminaries,
and quarters of the two Ghoutas,
And the abodes of the two Ghoutas—

منfrom حسنbeauty روضa garden أغنّlush

I wonder—shall I feast my eyes
Shall I, I wonder, fill my eye
on the beauty of a luxuriant garden?
With the beauty of a lush garden?

And O abodes of al-Sham,
And O lands of al-Sham,

Cradle of youth and love,

I thirst for your beauty,
Indeed, I thirst for your beauty,
for within you is the Garden of Eden.
For in you is the Garden of Eden.

والبعدand distance مرّbitter المذاقthe taste
Long has my yearning for you endured,
My longing for you has lasted long,
and separation is bitter to taste.
And distance tastes bitter.

I remain faithful to the covenant,
Indeed, I remain faithful to the pledge,
O cherished wish of the one who yearns!
O desire of the one who yearns!
