إن صحا القلبُ أو غفا

فهو للحب والوفا

Whether the heart wakes or slumbers,

it belongs to love and fidelity.

لمن طبعُه الجفا

It has not ceased to yield the reins

to one whose nature is coldness.

كلما قلتُ قد سلا

عنه غالي وأسرفَا

عنه غالي وأسرفَا

Whenever I said it had forgotten

him, it went to extremes and exceeded all bounds.

يا حبيبي أما رحمت

من الشوق مدنفا

O my beloved, have you not pitied

one gravely ill with longing?

نهنه الوجد قلبه

وعلى الموت اشرفا

Passion has subdued his heart,

and he has reached the brink of death.

لا تكن قاسي الطباع

وبالوصل مجحِفا

Do not be harsh by nature,

nor unjust in granting union.

وإذا الدهر أسعفا

وإذا الدهر أسعفا

لا تضع ساعة الصفا

And when fortune lends its aid,

do not waste the hour of bliss.

سيحول الصبا غدا

سيحول الصبا غدا

وترى الحسن اكلفا

وترى الحسن اكلفا

Youth will change tomorrow,

and you will see beauty blemished.

وإذا ما مضى الصبا

وإذا ما مضى الصبا

وإذا حسنه عفا

وإذا حسنه عفا

And when youth has passed,

and when its beauty has faded,

وإذا لم تعد ترى

وإذا لم تعد ترى

أهيف القدّ أهيفا

أهيف القدّ أهيفا

and when you no longer see

a slender-waisted figure still slender,

عندها يدرك الذي

عندها يدرك الذي

جارَ كم كان مسرفا

جارَ كم كان مسرفا

then he will realize—the one who

was unjust—how excessive he had been.

في غدٍ يذكرُ الهوى

في غدٍ يذكرُ الهوى

ويطيلُ التلَهَّفا

ويطيلُ التلَهَّفا

Tomorrow he will remember love,

and prolong his regretful yearning.
