O heart, how often you lament the chains,

and the distant horizon fills you with longing.

You hope for freedom in life—

    no chains and no bounds.

And how often you rebel against the old,

yet the new does not please you.

Illusions and the ages have fashioned for us

    a fetter of iron.

And how often hopes burden us

    with manifold kinds of chains.

How often they have made sound thought barren

    and shackled the steadfast nature.

Live as long as you choose to live:

there is neither new nor old.

I pay no heed to time,

nor to place, nor to existence.

I pay no heed to annihilation,

nor do I think of immortality.

I am a bewildered thought that travels

through this expanse as it wishes.
