دع عنك أيام السرور

بين الجنائن والغدير

Set aside the days of joy

Amid the gardens and the pond.

واهجر لبانات الهوى

والبيض ربات الخدور

And abandon the longings of love,

And the fair women, mistresses of curtained chambers.

واترك كؤوس الخمر فهي

لكل خوار حقير

And leave the cups of wine, for they are

For every contemptible weakling.

ما أنت لليوم اليسير

بل أنت لليوم العسير

You are not meant for the easy day,

But you are meant for the difficult day.

فانهض إلى الهيجا ولبّ

نداء موطنك الأسير

Rise, then, to battle, and answer

The call of your captive homeland.

فلقد طغى الإفرنج فيه

واخفضوه من الشرور

For indeed, the Franks have run rampant there,

And brought it low through evil.

قد أوردوه الحتف فهو

من الدمار على شفير

They have led it to death, so it is

On the brink of destruction.

وأذل فيه كل مئناف

ومغوار صبور

And every proud man there has been humbled,

And every daring, steadfast warrior.

ويكرّمون بنا الصغير

ويهزأون من الكبير

And they honor the lowly among us,

And scoff at the great.

ملأوا البلاد من المذلة

والرذائل والفجور

They have filled the land with humiliation,

And vices and depravity.

أحكامهم ملئت عتوّا

فهي من ظلم وجور

Their rulings are filled with arrogance,

So they consist of oppression and injustice.

هم يدّعون بأن عصرهم

لمن أزهى العصور

They claim that their age

Is surely among the most splendid of ages.

خسئوا ومنوا بالضلالة

والمذلة والثبور

May they be abased and afflicted with error,

With humiliation and ruin.

هاتيك أيام الرشيد

فتلك معجزة الدهور

Those were the days of al-Rashid,

For those were the miracle of the ages.

ولقد بدا عدل الخلائف

للضرير وللبصير

And the justice of the caliphs was indeed manifest

To the blind and to the sighted.

يا شبل يعرب آن أن

تحتاط لليوم المطير

O cub of Ya‘rub, the time has come

For you to prepare for the rainy day,

حتى إذا شبت لظاها

كنت كالأسد الهصور

So that, when its blaze flares up,

You will be like a fierce lion.

من يطلب الأمر الخطير

يضحّ بالشىء الخطير

Whoever seeks a momentous goal

Must sacrifice something precious.

والموت خير للفتى

بالطعن في ثغر النحور

And death is better for a young man,

By thrusts into the hollows of throats,

من أن يصاب بعلة

ويموت وهو على السرير

Than to be stricken with an illness

And die while lying in bed.

والعيش لا يهنا إذا

عاش المسود كالأجير

And life is not sweet when

A chief lives like a hired hand.

والحرّ في ظلم القبور

خير من الملك الأسير

And a free man in the darkness of graves

Is better than a captive king.

يا شبل يعرب لست ممن

يرتضي العيش المرير

O cub of Ya‘rub, you are not among those

Who accept a bitter life.

ما كنت يوما من يهاب

من الوعيد أو النذير

Never have you been one to fear

A threat or a warning.

فعلام تقعد والبلاد

من المهانة في سعير

Why, then, do you sit idle while the land

Burns in the fire of humiliation?

خضّب ثراها بالدماء

فقد دعتك إلى النفير

Dye its soil with blood,

For it has called you to arms.

والمجد لا يحيا إذا

لم تسقه بدم غزير

And glory cannot live if

You do not water it with abundant blood.

لا تمهر الحرية الحمراء

بالثمن اليسير

The bride-price of blood-red freedom is not paid

With a paltry sum.

كلا ولا تعطى جزافا

دون قاصمة الظهور

No indeed! Nor is it granted at random,

Without an ordeal that breaks backs.

ويفوز فيها نازعوها

من قشاعيم النسور

And those who triumph are those who wrest it

From the mighty old eagles.

هذا صلاح الدين يهتف

فيك من خلف العصور

Here is Salah al-Din calling out

Within you, from beyond the ages,

أن ليس للوطن المفدى

غير عزمك من نصير

That the homeland worth sacrificing for has

No champion but your resolve.
