    They fired the cannon heralding Eid,

    And this herald startled the heart.

    Anguish in my breast, and sorrows,

    Lay hidden; the reminder stirred them.

    ليس يألو حرصا عليها الضمير

    Perhaps they are memories of an old sorrow;

    Conscience spares no effort in cherishing them.

    They reminded me of what lies between my today and my yesterday,

    And showed me how the celestial spheres turn.

    بات ينتابه الشقاء المرير

    Ah, Eid, how many a sorrowful, dejected soul

    Has spent the night assailed by bitter misery;

    And a bereaved soul whom worry and sickness weigh down,

    And whose strength a dire calamity saps,

    Has spent the night with neither companion nor comforter,

    When sorrow overwhelms and evils turn blind.

    They all went off to plunder pleasure,

    Where there is passion, and where there is wine.

    يحمل الهمّ وحده ويسير

    They left the wretched, miserable man alone;

    He bears his worry alone and walks on.

    Ah, O servant, have mercy on the needy.

    When the well-to-do young man is extravagant,

    How do their misery and hardship appear?

    How do deprivation and neglect appear?
