There once was an old man remembered with honor,
There was once a revered old man renowned for his generosity
Who strummed an oud, captivating and enchanting.
Who would play the oud, enchanting and beguiling all
وكانand he was برغدِin the ease of العيشِliving ينهَىforbidding ويأمُرُand commanding

فَأخنى عَلَيهِ الدهرُ والدهرُ يغدرُ
In the ease of his life, he forbade and commanded;
In his comfortable life he would advise and command
Then time laid him low—and time is treacherous.
But time betrayed him, for time is ever a traitor

فَحَارَبَ بالصّبرِ الجميلِ زمانَهُ
The days betrayed him soon after his hair turned gray.
And days long past deceived him when his hair turned white
He battled his times with gracious patience,
So he battled time with graceful patience

Hoping this patience might set his affairs right.
Hoping this patience would set his affairs right
But when he was tried by his children, he bit his fingertips,
But when he was tested with the loss of his son, he gnashed his teeth in grief

And the patience he possessed deserted and betrayed him.
And the patience he had deserted and betrayed him
He became an outcast, captive to calamities.
So he became an outcast, captive to sorrows

The world closed in upon him, and he condemned its affection.
The world felt too confining, so he blamed it and shunned its affection
Alone with his soul, he sought to guide it aright,
And when alone with his soul, he sought to guide it saying:

Sometimes between the mountains you would see his silhouette

Roaming as his oud became his bosom friend

The old man's tears flowed freely, pouring down,
As the world felt too small however vast
وضاقَتand grew narrow بهaround him الدنياthe world بواسعdespite the vastness of رحبِهاits expanse
وضاقَت به الدنيا بواسع رحبِها

فألقى بنَفسٍ تَبتَغي عَفوَ ربّها
And the world, for all its vastness, closed in upon him.
He cast off a soul seeking its Lord's pardon
Then he cast himself forth, a soul seeking its Lord's pardon,
Wandering in yearning toward the axis of its pole

Wandering in longing toward the center of its pole,
A heart bound for the abode of eternity and bliss"
And a heart yearning joyfully for the abode of eternity.
