The sun comes and goes, yet
The sun comes and goes but for me
to me, sunrise is like sunset.
Sunrise is like sunset

وذاكand that يُدميmakes bleed القلبَthe heart حتىuntil يذوبit melts
This drives sleep from my eye,
One takes away sleep from my eyelids
and that makes the heart bleed until it melts.
The other makes my heart melt until dissolved

وفيand in الدجىthe darkness بينَamong الدراريthe radiant stars أجوبI roam
At midmorning I yearn, O my soul,
At dawn I yearn, oh my inner self
and in the darkness I roam among the radiant stars.
And at nightfall, among the homes, I wander

وأرقُبُand I watch الأيّامَthe days حتّىuntil تؤوبyou return
I lament in verse after parting,
I lament with poems after parting
and watch the days until you return.
And watch the days until they relent

ذنباًa sin لكنتُthen I would be اليومَtoday كلّيall of me ذنوبsins
If my lament were deemed by humankind
If my lamentation were, for all people
a sin, today I would be nothing but sins.
A sin, then today I'd be nothing but sins

But the heart's solace is that sorrow
But the heart's solace is that sadness
has become poetry that hearts have fallen in love with.
Has become poetry, loved by all hearts
