Once a sparrow passed by a trap.

He said, ‘Why, my friend, are you alone?’

So the trap replied, ‘I seek solitude.

Indeed, my life in seclusion is comfortable.

Humankind has nothing in this world but

some hope between a promise and a threat.

I see in people nothing but all that

brings worry and adds to affliction.’

‘Then why are you lying in the dust?’

The sparrow asked, ‘What are these bonds?’

It said, ‘I am a worshipper who does not turn aside

    from prayer, bowing, and prostration.

And likewise, the rope upon my shoulder

is the garb of ascetics, men of vows.

And this staff that you see—

it is my crutch when I stand and sit.

Look, then, at the wheat that I prepared—

my surplus food, for a poor soul or a wanderer.’

Then the sparrow complained, ‘I am hungry,

lost in the desert’s trackless waste, an outcast.

Have you any spare food to feed me,

O pious one? My hunger is indeed severe!’

It said, ‘Take the wheat—eat it!’ Then off went

that sparrow to the wheat, happy.

He stretched his beak toward the wheat, happy.

He sought to take the grain, beguiled by the promises.

The trap snapped shut on him, gripping

his neck in a claw that rends iron.

Then the sparrow wept when he saw

that he himself would soon return.

He said, ‘Truly the proverbs have said: do not

trust the world, for there is no loving friend in it.’
