Oh, would that I had what the sons of humankind have called

'worldly dross,' so I might give to the wretched and bestow gifts.

Generous is the man who distributes his wealth,

But whoever gives from the heart is more generous.

Have you not seen me, though Time has mortally wounded my soul,

Teaching the gray dove of the sanctuary how to sing?

If a soul becomes good through wealth, then it

Is surely better for giving of what it has.

For wealth is but a thing that departs after your death,

And generosity is but the making of what never departs.
