My two nights—my night in separation and my day—
Race each other in sorrow toward verse.
فلَكمso often نَفَحتُI bestowed الليلَthe night كلّevery مُرِنّةٍresonant song
عَزّتproved unattainable علىto داودَDavid والمزمارِand the pipe
How often I have gifted night each ringing song
Beyond the reach of David and the pipe.
ونَفَختُand I blew ناييmy flute نائحاًlamenting فتَلَفّتَتso they turned to look
زُهرُradiant ones النّجومِof the stars لنَغمتيtoward my melody وقراريand my low notes
And I blew my flute, lamenting; then turned
The radiant stars toward my melody and my low notes.
ونثرتُand I scattered شعريmy verse فيin النهارthe daytime فلملَمَتso they gathered up
دُرَرَpearls الحنينِof longing نوائحُlamenting ones الأطيارِof the birds
And I scattered my verse by day; then gathered
The mourning birds the pearls of longing.
فرّقتُI scattered فيthroughout الدنياthe world فِداكِas ransom for you مواهبيmy gifts
وبقيتُand I remained أغنىthe richest الناسof people بالتّذكارin memories
I scattered my gifts throughout the world as ransom for you,
And I remained the richest of all in memories.
