خليليmy friend تمطّىstretched itself out الحزنُgrief فانقبضso tightened الصّدرthe breast
غَداةَon the morning تنادَواthey called to one another قدindeed قضىdied الرجلthe man الحرُّfree
My friend, grief stretched itself out, and my breast tightened,
My friend, sorrow has wrapped itself around me, so my chest tightened
on the morning they called to one another: 'The free man has died.'
The morning after you bid farewell, for the free man had passed away
عجبتُI marveled لعينيat my eye حينwhen قلتُI said لهاto it اذرفيshed tears
وقدand already سبقتنيit outpaced me والدموعand the tears بهاin it حمرُred
I marveled at my eye when I told it, 'Weep,'
I was surprised at my eyes when I told them "weep!"
for it had already outpaced me, and its tears were red.
For they had preceded me, and tears within them were red
وَياand O وَيلwoe نفسيmy soul يومَthe day قلتُI said لهاto it اصبريbe patient
ولمand did not أدرِI know أنّthat النّفسthe soul فارَقهَاleft it الصّبرُpatience
And woe to my soul the day I told it, 'Be patient,'
Oh, woe to my soul the day I told it "be patient"
and I did not know that patience had forsaken my soul.
Yet I did not know that patience had left it
وياand O ويحalas for قلبيmy heart كيفَhow باتَspent the night مُقلَّباًbeing turned over
علىon جَمرةٍan ember ماnot زالceased يُضرمهاkindles it الدهرُtime
And alas for my heart—how it spent the night being turned
Oh, woe to my heart, how it spent the night tossing and turning
upon an ember that time keeps kindling.
On embers that fate persists in igniting
نثرتُI scattered خليليmy friend فوقupon قبركyour grave أدمُعاًtears
يقصِّرُfalls short عنof أوصافهاtheir descriptions النظمُverse والنثرُand prose
My friend, I scattered tears upon your grave
I scattered tears over your grave, my friend
that verse and prose fall short of describing.
Which prose and poetry fall short of describing
يقُولونthey say بعدَafter الموتِdeath نمضيwe go لأنجُمٍto stars
هُنالكَthere لاno موتٌdeath يكونُexists ولاand no قَبرُgrave
They say that after death we journey to stars,
They say after death we march on to stars
where there is neither death nor grave.
Where there is neither death nor grave
فَبِاللهِso, by God قُلtell ليto me أيّwhich نجمٍstar تَومّهُyou head toward it
لأمضيthat I may go ِإلَيهِto it بعدَafter أنthat ينقضيends العُمُرlife
So, by God, tell me which star you are bound for,
So by God, tell me, to which star shall I go
that I may go to it after my life has ended,
After my life ends, so we can live forever
فَنَحيَاso we may live جميعاًall together فيin مكانٍa place مُؤبّدٍeverlasting
ولاand not يُختَشىis feared فِيهin it شقاءٌmisery ولاnor ضرّharm
and we may live together in an everlasting place,
In an eternal abode, safe from misery and harm
where neither misery nor harm is feared.
Oh grave of my beloved, upon you clouds of pardon burst forth
فيَاso O قبرgrave منthe one whom أهوىI love علَيكupon you تَفَجّرَتburst forth
سحائبُclouds عَفوٍforgiveness كُلّماwhenever طلَعrose الفجرُthe dawn
So, O grave of the one I love, over you burst forth
Each time dawn rises
clouds of forgiveness whenever dawn breaks.
Oh seed of my heart that I planted in his soil
وياand O حبّةseed القلبِthe heart التيwhich قدalready زَرَعتهاI planted it
علىupon تُربِهِits soil والدّمعُand the tears منيfrom me لهاfor it قطرُrain
And O seed of my heart that I have planted
My tears its watering
upon its soil, with my tears as rain for it,
As love grows and turns green
فهاso here أناI لمdid not أبرحI cease علىat القبرِthe grave واقفاًstanding
أراقبُI watch كيفَhow الحَبّthe seed ينموgrows ويَخضرّand turns green
so here I am, still standing at the grave,
I shall live well with my love though his course in life
watching how the seed grows and turns green.
Was far from perfect, yet kindness to him remains my creed
وأنشقُand I breathe in ريّاfragrance مَنthe one whom أُحبّI love وإنand even if يَكُنbe
طوَتهُenfolded him سُلَيمَىSulayma سوفwill يبقىremain لهُfor him نَشرُfragrance
And I breathe in the fragrance of the one I love, and though
And I recall all his past that I adored
Sulayma has enfolded him, his fragrance will remain.
And keep the pact between us that the Final Day will see
وأذكُرُand I remember منهُof him كُلّevery ماضٍpast thing عشِقتهُI cherished it
وأرعَىand I honor لَهُto him عَهداًa pledge يُشاهِدُهwitnesses it الحَشرُthe Resurrection
And I recall every part of his past that I cherished,
and I honor a pledge to him that the Resurrection will witness.
