ودعِ الذكر لليلى وسعاد
Leave aside news of Salma, O Samir,
Abandon news of Salma, O Samir
And set aside remembrance of Layla and Suad.
And leave the mention of Layla and Saad

And draw near to the name of she where is the fragrance
Beside the fragrance of her breaths in every gathering?
From the aroma of her breath in every meadow

She once dwelt at ease [uncertain reading]—and what a fine pasture!
She was once enraged and what a good pasture

A gift from the Almighty Creator
He has bestowed her on humankind until the final return.
Who has endowed her to humanity until the return

He said: from her abundant good is to be hoped for;
He said many good things are hoped from her
So live at ease in her shade, O servants.
So graze in the shade of this, O servants

One wasted by love's torment has called her to love;
Passion has invited her to love's affliction
He kept lamenting fate's manifold calamities.
Complaining of time's troubles

He said my life without her has faded
And my days, if serene, are deceitful.

For how many hearts have melted in love for her!
Then for how many did hearts melt in loving her

So when my tears are like the downpour
They do not quench the fire of love's volcano.
It cannot extinguish the volcano's love

Oh! My yearning for the days of youth
For the days of youth there is no return.
For the days of youth there is no return

I wonder till when will I shed tears

Strange that I live enamored in the West
While my heart is in the lands of the East.
While my heart is in the meadows of the East

That has been my way since I bade the homeland farewell.
That is my habit since leaving the country

How wonderful if I could attain my desire!
If only my wish to reach it would be fulfilled
