In love's arena, among the graceful maidens,

I burdened my heart with passion beyond my strength.

But for a little movement in its restlessness,

I would have thought it a piece of solid rock.

I kept distracting it from what had befallen it,

And I bent over it until my neck was twisted.

Until, when it defied me as it reminded me,

While I played at being young, of youth that was no more,

    فَوَلّدتهُ جديداً أيّ تَولِيدِ

    I forced it to drink the cup, a flame rising over its surface;

So I gave it birth anew—what a rebirth!

And I cried in rapture: if even the least of it

Were to last, I would live without care or sleeplessness.

O cupbearer of unmixed wine, if it blazes

And sparkles, bring it without cooling.

This daughter of the vine has grown old; if she could speak,

She would tell of a youth born in the vineyard.

If someone else has sipped it while it was in a goblet,

I sipped it while it lay in the berries of the grape clusters.

O oud player, who draws the melodies

From the heart's beat, repeat the oud's beat.

You reminded me of songs I dearly loved,

In the days when love dictated my songs.

Where can night find one like me who has kept vigil through it?

And who echoes love's voice as I echo it?

Ask the nightingales about me in their leafy groves:

How often in love they imitated my lament and my warbling!

I am the one who has crossed the deserts of passion, and has not

Ceased to yearn for the deserts whenever they are mentioned.

And man makes his way through the world, his end:

A life that passes, and traces left for immortality.
