قدindeed كانthere was عنديin my possession وردةٌa rose
قد كان عندي وردةٌ
تَلقىgreets الضّحىthe morning light ببَشاشةِwith cheerfulness
تَلقى الضّحى ببَشاشةِ
I once had a rose
I once had a rose
That greeted the morning light with cheer;
That greeted the morn with delight
فَتَوَلّعَتthen it became enamored بِفراشةٍof a butterfly
فَتَوَلّعَت بِفراشةٍ
شبهتهاI likened it بفراشتيto my butterfly
شبهتها بفراشتي
Then it became enamored of a butterfly
It was smitten by a butterfly
Which I likened to my butterfly.
I likened it to my own spirit
ياO وردتيmy rose إنif تَذبليyou wither
يا وردتي إن تَذبلي
لكِfor you أسوةٌa source of solace بحشاشتيin what remains of my life
لكِ أسوةٌ بحشاشتي
O my rose, if you should wither,
O my rose if you were to wither
You have solace in what remains of my life.
You would have my fluttering heart as your model
