فياso, oh شُدَّhow harsh ماwhat تلقاهُyou endure it ياO جسديmy body الباليworn-out
I marvelled at her: she never stays in one state.
I wonder at her, she does not settle in one state
So, how harsh is what you endure, O my worn-out body!
Oh how much adversity you have encountered, my weary body
تغرِّدُshe sings فيin الظلماءthe darkness حولaround قصورهاher palaces
وعندand at انبثاقthe breaking الفجرdawn تبكيshe weeps بأطلالِby ruins
She sings in the darkness around her palaces,
She sings in the darkness around her palaces
And at the break of dawn she weeps by ruins.
And at the break of dawn she weeps over ruins
فياso, oh لكِto you منof نفسٍa soul أَبِيتُI spend the night لأجلهاfor her sake

So, what a soul you are! For your sake I spend the night
Oh what a soul you are, for whom I stayed up at night
With an upturned gaze wandering among the stars.
With a watching eye, wandering among the stars

لنيلto attain أمانيthe wishes of النفسthe soul يزهدhe has no desire بالمالِfor wealth
And whoever, like me, makes poetry a ladder
And one like me who makes poetry a ladder
To attain the soul's wishes, has no desire for wealth.
To attain the soul's wishes will spurn wealth
وربَّand many a امرئٍman عالٍlofty يرىhe sees الناسpeople دونهbeneath him
وإنeven though كانhe is بينamong الناسpeople منخفضlow in الحالِstanding
And many a lofty man sees people beneath him,
Many a high man sees people below him
Even though his standing among people is low.
Though among people he is of lowly state
إذاif كانis فقريmy poverty منfrom شعوريmy sensibility ناتجًاresulting
فمُتْthen die ياO غِنَىwealth وليَحْيَand let live شعريmy poetry وإقلاليand my poverty
If my poverty springs from my sensibility,
If my poverty stems from my consciousness
Then die, O wealth, and let my poetry and my poverty live!
Then die, oh riches, and long live my poetry and paucity
