His world betrayed him, so its doors

Were shut against him on every side.

The stars do not rise in his night,

Nor does the sun appear at dawn.

Nor does he see the tawny wine in its cup

When it is passed around by the cupbearers' hands.

I saw him walking, while his cane

Knocked at livelihood's door among the pedestrians.

He strives patiently, and on his face

Shines the mark of contentment and steadfastness.

So I said, “O my soul, stop and look:

A blind man shows us how life becomes sweet.”

I have seen people with no decency,

And their wealth on earth knows no bounds.

So my heart nearly doubted its Lord,

Even if this doubt caused it great pain.
