Tears in my eyes have not dried,

and a fire in my heart has not died down.

So, O tears, are you from a deep sea?

And, O fire, are you from a hearth?

I pray to Moses and worship Jesus,

and recite a greeting of peace upon Ahmad.

I sought a helper against calamities,

so time passed, and I found no guidance.

Whenever poetry wanders through my mind,

I compose verse, with my hand upon my breast.

I turn my gaze across the vastness of space,

and go sorrowfully to my resting place.

I say—my yesterday has broken its promises,

and my today is like my yesterday—“Perhaps my tomorrow...”

So, O Time, if I complain, do not be deceived:

for I do not stand as a beggar.
