I remembered my homelands on the riverbank,

And longing's flame surged in my heart's secret chamber.

I loosed tears that separation's hand had inflicted

On me, till within me they fell in sobbing drops.

Two enemies since the beginning, yet to my misery

They have agreed that I should spend my life in torment.

Neither does the fire in my breast dry my tears,

Nor do my tears extinguish the fire in my breast.

It seems my lot has become a sea of calamities,

Forever rising in my heart, without an ebb.

I conceal my patience as calamities assail me,

Yet far be it that calamities should overcome my patience.

My fate frightens me with parting, as though it

Knows that I fear nothing but parting.

Amid the darkness of nights and their injustice, I remain

Smiling of face, untroubled in thought.

I fashion rhymes with jeweled throats,

Virgin brides emerging from their chambers.

Whenever longing's breeze stirs my poetic gift,

Pearls fall from it into the garden of poetry.

They built it into towers with fluttering banners,

Upon summits that have become beyond the eagle's reach.

Lights shine within them by night, as though they

Gleamed before us among the planets and bright stars.

When the sun catches sight of them, they appear to an onlooker

As brides unveiled in garments of gold.

And if the rain-laden lightning laughs, playfully caressing

Their summits, I recoil between fear and terror.

The wild winds pass, angry and storming,

    Over every lofty tower, smiling-lipped.

It seems the hand of days is too short to reach it,

And the gaze of nights has strayed into the barren waste.

I picture the subway on the day the crowds gathered

Within it; I thought them at the gathering of the Resurrection.

Its cars go forth crammed full of people,

And return through it, heavily laden, toward the bridge.

Yet what harm came to them, with electricity drawing them?

And how many like them now run above it!

I marveled at a land: how crowded with its people,

Yet it still greets the throng with a smile!

Those on the surface envy those who travel in its depths,

And those in its depths envy those who travel on the surface.

And a river through whose depths the trains pass

Spends the night carefree and openhearted.

It resembles the blue vault: steamships glide

Upon it with lights, gliding like the vault's stars.

When rain-laden thunder roars through its sky,

Angrily, the steamships answer it in the river.

They fear collision in its darkness, as though

They say to it, 'O thunder, do not intend me harm.'

How many a lush garden's breeze has stirred,

Reviving a heart that lay in the grave's darkness!

You see graceful women there like gazelles in Mecca,

Roaming freely, yet hunting them is sacrilege.

How many a night I have spent in its shade!

Whenever I remember my family, I weep at the memory.

How often a dove has stirred the yearning heart

With its singing above the garden's green branches!

It seems that it and I are two strangers, lamenting

The turns of nights, while nights bring us low.

How sweet, by God, my solitude, as my tears

Punctuate all that is sweet in verse and prose!

And a supple-limbed woman, for whose sake the lover

Endures a cruel heart hewn from rock.

You cry, perspiring as you woo her:

'Behold, marvel: I am drunk without wine!'

She surpasses the skittish gazelles in her glances,

And what is a bamboo stem beside her waist?

Her face is like the full moon; but for its radiance,

You would walk in a pitch-black night of her hair's darkness.

When she speaks to a lover, he melts with longing,

Not to mention the coquetry there, and the magic!

O what a land you are, where minds have soared,

Till you have come to hold command at glory's summit!

How many a scholar, vast as the sea, when he steps forth

Upon a pulpit one day, speaks in pearls!

And an inventor whose fame has filled the earth,

And proverbs about him travel over land and sea!

Men who have wonders to show every day,

As though, within time, they had triumphed over time.

They braved the sea's tumult, and the sea was humbled,

And leveled the land's passes in defiance of the land.

And vessels among them cleft the skin of the sky,

Nor did they fear the outcome of their venture in the air.

They have such resolve that, had the earth its like,

It would break the shackles of gravity and captivity.

As though He who formed the earth had singled them out

Upon it, with days white-stockinged and white-blazed.

I said to myself, bewildered by all that filled

The city of this age—indeed, the wonder of the age—

'When, I wonder, will the Syrian's knowledge ripen,

And he stand proud in his homelands, lofty in esteem,

So the sorrowful may rejoice, the exile take delight,

And the yearning one return, if only at life's end?'

And I went on, as though between past and present

And the days to come, knowing and not knowing.
