    Look at how time turns,

and how the conqueror of the Turks is conquered.

And marvel at him who led lions into battle,

swooping down within it like meteors:

how his resolves have come to falter,

and flight has become his keenest weapon.

He who rode horses as they swam

in a sea of war whose surging waves were flame—

as though he had never trodden their shoulders,

with the army around him, stained with blood,

nor had charging Death been repelled by

    battalions surging like seas.

Indeed, those before whom the enemies fell

in war are now assailed by ruin.

Scarcely had word of their noble deeds spread

when it vanished as though it were a lie.

Books have honored them within their pages,

and books have vilified them within their pages.

Who will tell the people, after they grew covetous,

that they departed just as they came?

O day of their conquest at Arna,

    whose furnace melted the swords,

in a battle, with armored warriors gathered

around death, their knees betraying them!

When their banners appeared above them,

with victory dwelling in them, they rejoiced.

They grew drunk on the wine of their conquest,

as though they had drunk wine.

What the Turks built did not avail them, though

they had fortified themselves in castles and hidden away.

They thought their fortresses would protect them,

but this conquest exceeded what they had reckoned.

Tell those for whom time had grown serene,

so they pushed deep into the lands and seized them by force:

they even claimed those lands would remain theirs,

but soon humankind will know that they lied.

For if the Russians march in bands upon the earth,

it reels beneath their onslaught and trembles.

Long have they honored pledges to them,

and today they protect them, as they ought.

O commander of the army beneath banners

ascribed to the lion of al-Shara and tracing their lineage to him!

    لمّا عَلاها هَوَت بهِ الرّتبُ

    And a seeker of glory aspires to ranks;

when he rose to them, the ranks plunged down with him.

This is an age whose very clarity is murk,

and such are the nights: their vicissitudes are a marvel.

And many a faraway man you see smiling

watches the star while he is dejected.

He weeps for a homeland that now forever

draws tears for its plight and sobs,

and for a thought that composes verse, even though

worries and anguish have assailed it.

May my verse gain no renown for the pearls it holds,

nor may the Arabs boast of my poetry,

and may the forearm that unsheathed a pen be paralyzed,

from which verse and literature flow,

if I do not forge swords from my poems

at which foes quake and grow afraid.

For I am not one who yearns for ranks,

and I am not one whom gold deceives.
