    And a night in which the lamps of the stars are dim—

    I lit its darkness with the blaze of my sighs.

    And no companion in it save the sound of a beating heart,

    My depths echo it in the darkness.

    I long for the valley, for the wellspring of serenity,

    For its singing river, for the hills.

    Then longing slips from me in every ringing lament,

    Which the gray dove echoes in melodies.

    تحاكيَ مَدبَّ النملِ في الصفحاتِ

    And these are the chronicles of love and my exploits;

    They resemble ants' tracks upon the pages.
